What is the difference between the Opteron 1XX's and the Althon 64 X2?

I'm so far behind on my tech stuff. Thanks for the help.

Pretty much the same exept the optys are built with more silicon and built to last longer because they are server chips and they usually overclock higher than the athlons because of that. Also all optys have 1mg cache. Did I get that right?

So how does the number scheme work? How does a Opteron 165 relate to a 3800+ or whatever?

Opteron 165 is 1.8ghz chip with 1mg cache, the 3800+ is a 2.0 ghz chip with 512mg cache, the 3800+ should be faster at stock speed, most claim that the opteron will overclock better, but i got a good overclock on my 3800+. It comes down to luck if u get one which overlcoks well.

Optys are typically better, cooler running chips. They have more cache which does make a difference unlike what some may say. When comparing a 3800 with a 165 the biggest difference might be the multiplier. The 3800 has a 10x multiplier while the 165 has a 9x. The 3800 is more likely to be limited by the chip and the opty to be limited by the motherboard. i wouldnt pay a lot more but for the same price or a little more I would say go with the Opty.
