Opteron versus Athlon 64 FX - will either work on the same motherboard?

I'm looking at pricing currently, and am thinking about testing the pool on the new CPU's. I know that both the FX and Opteron are functionally the same CPU, but what I really want to know is whether you can use either CPU in boards designed for the opposite (more importantly: an Opteron in an enthusiast-level Athlon 64 FX board). I can swing about $200 for the CPU, even if it is <2.0ghz. But $700 ain't gonna happen.

An Opteron by any other name is still an Opteron 😉

Most FX branded motherboards (that I know of) show support for the Opteron on the manufactures website, so I think it is a safe bet that they all do. The boards/manufactures that dont mention support for the Opteron are probably doing so for marketing reasons, not because of they dont support it.

Follow the "product link" on all 3 of the 940 pin boards that newegg lists and this is what you will find.

Leadtek K8NW / K8NW PRO - Socket 940 for AMD Opteron or Athlon 64 FX processor

Asus SK8N - One 940-pin socket supports AMD Athlon 64 FX Procesor and AMD Opteron 100 series or 200 series CPU

Gigabyte GA-K8NNXP-940 - Socket 940 for AMD Athlon64 FX (link for "CPU support list" goes to a page that says "Coming soon !!")

This shows 2 out of 3 support Opteron right now and the third looks as if it will soon if it doesn't already, I would guess that it will run but the BIOS might not know what to call it.

I don't think any motherboard manufacturer would cut their potential sales by limiting a board so that it could only run 1 out of 5 CPUs that are (with the exception of name, and maybe stepping or speed) electrically and physically identical.
