Opteron...unimpressive?

Does anyone else find the Opteron unimpressive? its quite good if you compare it to today's CPU's but what about the Prescott?
Will the Athlon 64 have about the same performance?

what you've seen displayed are not final production, and if they were i'm sure amd has a few tricks up there sleeves to remain competitive in regards to core revisions

Huh? You can buy an Opteron today. That's pretty "final production" to me.

And actually I find performance quite impressive. I think that once they get more mobo and chipset support (ala nForce 3) the Opteron will really take off.

The 1Mb cache version of Athlon 64 should be pretty similar to Opteron in performance. As for comparison with Prescott, it's pretty hard to compare 2 CPUs that don't exist yet.

Ehh. on the net you can do everything! 🙂
Is there anyone here that is going to buy the Opteron for their next desktop? (not as a server)

Yes, in 7 days.

So do you want to compare the Prescott to the Opteron or the Athlon 64? They're not the same thing... the Opteron has buttloads of extra crap on it to accomodate multi-processor rigs and if I'm not mistaken, will have up to 2 MB of on die cache.
Comparing the Prescott to an Opteron is the same as comparing a P4 to an Athlon MP. The Opteron and Athlon MP are both server level processors, while as far as I know, the Prescott is another P4 designed for desktop use.

As Swanny said... it's hard to compare processors that don't exist today.

If you'd like a rough estimate of what the Athlon 64 will be capable of... read this article by AnandTech... it probably has the most relevant information to your question, desktop performance rather than server performance.

To early to tell!!! It is new the platforms are new and there is always a bit of tweaking and bug fixing. It will likley get a bit better. I assume it will look more impressive as they ramp up a bit....

Contrary to soulkeepers response...the current opteron is a finalized product. I am sure the ppll and companies who have bought them hope they were final products 😉 ....New yes but clearly a finalized wrap up for consumer product.....

this is kinda like when the P4 was released @ 1.3,1.4 and 1.5 Ghz Those things SUCKED. The 1.3 was barely if at all faster than the fastest pIII at the time Give them time to ramp I bet they will scream.

I say we wait for a few months and see before we judge based on review sites..........😀

I am hoping these processors will really take off and scale really well, because I want to see this "race" pushed even further. I want to see half a thz (terrahertz) in a desktop before I quit gaming.......😉

Server or workstation? Details please? Will there be a user review for us to read? 🙂

I second that. Given that practically nobody is running these things in anything other than a server config (they ain't exactly cheap, nor the mobos), YOU GOTTA HOOK US UP d00d! Please?!? 🙂 Give us some DivX encoding and 3dMark wouldja?

i was speaking of benchmarks on the net in comparison to what will be shipping when prescott is out
most of them aren't using "final production" stuff

i'm waiting for motherboard reviews and maybe a few chipsets competing

Well in the reviews I read they are running retail stuff and I don't like your implication or the impression you give this stuff is not good quality stuff....This is final production in the sense it is fit for purchase and that should be always considered final production...Yes there may be some revisions to fix bugs that may arise but I think final production has always been considered for items that hit the market for retail sales. This is not engineered samples for reviews only. At least half of the reviews I read stated this stuff was same as the stuff ready for sale.
