I've been searching for a couple days on how to OC an opteron processor and can't find anything on it. I'm more of a lurker on these boards, but after searching the forums I wasn't able to find an answer, so I'm asking outright in a post. I wanted this machine to be a gamer rig, so I took the advice of someone I thought was sharing the same ideals as me but apparently wasn't.

I know I'm going to get the question "Why do you have a server board for gaming?"

Well, I built my computer last June and didn't do much research, and now I'm trying to work with what I have. I even bought a lousy gainward FX 5900XT. Boy has that caused me problems. I have Corsair pc3200 XMS memory, 1 gig of it, so I figure it's overclockable as well, but from my bios I can't do jack.

Are there any programs, utilities, or something similar to OC my opteron? I have a tyan tiger K8WS motherboard, the single chip one. I know I can't OC from the bios, and utilities like clockgen don't seem to support it.

So I'm very doubtful I can overclock at this point in time, I'm just wanting a confirmation. Thanks!

With that board I think you are SOL. A new vid card is your best upgrade path for better gaming performance so sell that FX for what you can get and buy 6800GT or X800pro.

Doh, yeah I figured.

On a side note, can my opteron be a viable gaming alternative with a new video card? It has dual memory channel bandwidth and I do have two sticks of fast memory ... did I buy a lame duck or is there potential any anyone's eyes?

New GFX card.

on the subject of overcocking, someone was talking about OCing a dual Xeon, so if you can OC one server chip, i don't see why you can't OC the other.

I was thinking og getting a LEadtek 6600GT from newegg, they're pretty cheap and did well in the 6600GT roundup i think. I really want a 6800 or 6800 GT but can't afford those at the moment ... but I think this is a wise decision. Better than the one i made before for sure!

Go with the fastest video card you can afford, and you will be happy. Your Opteron will run about 1-2% slower than the same speed Athlon64 939 pin (registered memory slows it down a shade.) Other than that, they work GREAT at gaming. I know.....(and NO duallies aren;t faster to speak of for gaming)

Eh? But I like my Opteron!

Thanks for the vote of confidence Markfw900, that helps a bunch, actually. I thought I was gimped but I guess I'll do ok eventually!

Ever on the quest for more speed, I have yet another question. I have a 120GB 7200rpm SATA hard drive. Should I partition part of it for system and have the rest for games and such? I have seen people talk about it, but I'm in the dark on why they do it.

It's a 146 rated at 2Ghz, it's plenty fast, that's for sure. When I'm playing CS:S (with all the setting turned to medium mind you, any higher and my systems reboots when changing maps), I'm usually the first person in the game and running around for a good 10 seconds before the game commences. I think I'm happy with my selection.

And there it is just bought a Leadtek 6600GT AGP video card, should be here by Friday. Whoohoo!

That would be the equivalent of an Athlon64 939pin 3200+ (1-2% slower at the most) You could get any video card out there and not be cpu limited IMO......

Edit (except the 1600x1200 doom3 at ultra settings or stupid things like that....even then might be video card limiting)
