Senior member
hey guys, i'm building a small database/mass e-mail server for my workplace..

here is the configuration so far...

Tyan Tiger K8W Dual socket Motherboard.
AMD Opteron 240(1.4Ghz) ~ 1 for now.. will add second later.
Stock heatsink fan.
1 GB of Samsung/Crucial PC-3200 ECC Registered DDR Memory.
2 WD Raptors 36GB in raid1
Onboard SATA controller.
LG DVD ROM
MSI nVidia FX 5200/MX440

Stand alone server case.

Still not sure about the P/S(???)

Any comments/opinions are much appreciated! 🙂

Thanks 🙂

you want to send some of that spare money this way?
😀😎🙂

make sure you get a redundant p/s
unfortunately i cant think of any good ones of hand but antec, powermax

if your server is mission critical then i would suggest one.
its just that i have seen many systems down for the count because of p/s but for your setup its better to buy a high-quality 400w one
that should be fine

I would recommend SCSI drives. Depends on what you mean by small DB server to an extant. Small to me is usually under 500 users, to others its 50 and others its 5000, depends on how big the DB itself is as well. However, SCSI just about always kick the crap out of IDE in server enviornment so almost no matter how many users you have its the way to go.

Ordered everything yesterday: Tyan Tiger K8W dual socket motherboard, Opteron 240(1 CPU), 2 WD 36GB Raptors for raid1, Kingston 1 GB registered ECC Kit 😀

If you don't want to build, check out Sun's new Sun Five Z20V Opteron servers. Shaping up to be something nice.

you can build a small database/e-mail server using less expensive components that will probably be just as good. do you really need an opteron when an athlon can do, especially since you're not even using more than 4gb of ram? also 2 36gb disks in a raid 1 configuration means that you get 36gb of storage. that's fine but i think that's also another thing against using an opteron because you don't need it.
