Hi.

Recently, when I have been browsing the different builds people have been putting up on the AT forums for review by the AT community, a lot of people have been using AMD Opteron processors.

The last time I followed these processors was before the Athlon 64 line came out.
I remember that the reviews said that the Opteron was good for server applications, but not for gaming.

Does this still hold true, are they cheaper, and why else do people use them (over A64, X2, etc)?

Socket 940 Opterons indeed suck for gaming, but the Socket 939 Opterons are just cherry picked/binned A64s for low-voltage and very tight tolerances to meet the stability demands of single socket workstations, so they overclock great and rock for gaming.

Aren't opterons just underclocked versions of the FX series? That's what I read someplace.
