Opteron question

I'm curious if anyone knows of any Opteron 2xx to Athlon 64 speed comparisons. I'm curious to know how well the 2xxs do. Is the 242 comparable to a 3000+? Is the 246 comparable to the 3500+?

Anyone know of any sites for a good comparison?

well, first of all...there are three versions of the opteron family....
1xx, which is for single-processor environments
2xx. which are for dual-cpu configs
8xx, which can be 4 -8 cpu configs.

the fastest 2xx opteron is the 242. it has a 2.6Ghz clock speed and 1M of cache. sounds a bit like the athlon64 FX-55, right? well, it mostly is, but the opterons can only use ecc registered ram, which is a bit slower. as well, opterons have multiple hypertransport links, which the FX's don't

Thanks for the reply. I'm currently a dual-MP user and I'm just checking to see if there would be any advantage in going to Opterons. I game a lot, but I also run lots of background programs. Gaming performance will be the main deciding factor here.

I already know the basic technical differences in XPs, MPs, Opterons, and A64s, I'm just looking for a rough idea of what to expect in gaming performance.

The fastest Opteron is the x52. Best value is the 244.

Opterons of the same clockspeed of the slower 939s may actually be faster in games because of the 1MB cache. I can't give you anything conclusive though.
