Opteron CPU Stepping

I've decided to go with the Opteron 175 for the Gaming rig I'm building now. I've heard a few different people talk about the stepping.

I've heard that I should get either the CABNE or the CABYNE and to try to aviod the CABGE.

Does this pretain to the overclockability of the CPU? I plan on over clocking it with the setup in my sig.

Anyone know what the facts are about the stepping or how much of a difference there is between the ones I've listed? Do any online stores let you request a stepping when you order? If I'm going to pay $500+ for a CPU I want to get the best for the money.

Thanks for any input.

good question. same question here. but i can say that online stored won't let you pick which one you want. just like they won't let you pick the GTO that flashes to a XT only.
but if someone could point out which ones have the CABYNE (as if they look different or packaged different), that'd be cool

First of all the Opteron 175 is a dual core, not a single core.

The CABYE and the CABNE is the best stepping silicon, but these steppings are the steppings from the single core opteron's, same as the CAB2E and the CABGE.

With the dual core opterons, you will find that an average OC of around 2.6+ is attainable, depending on the cooling solution.

So far i have had a 165 see sig which was CCBWE 0534SPMW which is good for about 2.7 on 1.52 volts (I am running 2.6 so I can run my Ram 1:1). I have also a 175 with the steppings of CCBWE 0536XPMW, which is awfull and i will be sending back ASAP, this would not POST when set at 2.8Ghz at 1.55v **in my eyes that is not worthy**.

So far all dual core opterons have produced similar results between 2.5 and 2.7 without an excess of 1.5v, 2.8Ghz (if you are lucky) and this without the need for water cooling. The best silicon so far is the CCBWE 0530TPMW, which was released on the 170 and 175 dual core opterons when they were first released. This stepping is no longer in circulation, and people were getting 2.9Ghz+ with 1.45 volts

With regards to your question if you could find out the stepping before you buy, i think you will find next to no retailer or e-tailer will have this information as it is of no use to them, and also the stock is just kept in a warehouse so they will not have access to this info.

The only thing I can say is you?ll have to purchase one and find out. Unfortunately there is no real way to foresee what stepping you are going to get, until you receive it.

If you are looking for a single core, i would advise you look on ebay for a opty 146/148 with the CABYE 0540 FPAW, FPBW or FPMW stepping, as these three steppings can normally reach 3Ghz with less than 1.6v, and seem to be quite available. The 0540 means it was manufactured in week 40 of the year 2005, So you can see once that week batch has been sold the next batch will come in, and you will not be able to purchase it any longer, unless you go to ebay.

The CABNE stepping is the best single core silicon and i guarantee you will not find this anywhere (the CABNE 0540 do not perform well this is an exception). There was one site in the UK which actually advertised the steppings of a few processors, and one in particular was the 148 with the steppings of CABNE 0528GPMW, which is capable of ~3.2Ghz on less than 1.5 volts, this is by far the best silicon, and unfortunately i missed out buy a matter of hours :(

You are sending something back you have tried to overclock (and therefore voided the warranty)? Isn't that plain WRONG????????
