opteron and FX-5x's they are the same CPU right?

jus needs clearing up....was thinkin of upgradin my AMD rig later this summer when i get a job, was goin for a A64 3000 or a 2800

but been reading bout opterons...probably expensive and dont u need registered ram or sumthing?

This topic always confuses everyone, including myself. Here is how it is:

All FX and Opteron CPUs require registered memory. The Opteron, however, also requires the memory to be ECC. :beer:

Also, FX's cannot be used in multiple CPU systems, whereas Opteron 2xx and 8xx series can. But the other major difference is that the FX's have unlocked multipliers (for better overclocking options), while the Opterons are locked.

What about the 939 FX CPU's? They can use unregistered RAM if I'm not mistaken. It's only the Socket 940 FX chip's, and all Opteron's that require registered RAM.
