Opteron 246 Cooling

Hi cooling experts,

I got a Sun W2100z Workstation with two Opteron 246 CPUs.

The fans inside the box are very noisy, so noisy that I can barely sit next to it and work.

There're only three fans: One for each CPU and a 120mm Delta AFB1212SHE system/case fan.

The bios only gives "Second CPU Temp". It seems to be high after power on or normal use: 59C/138F.

I am looking for an (two) ultra quiet (yet efficient) CPU Fan to replace the current one.
Zalman CNPS7000A-Cu seems to be very popular, however, it looks like I have to take out the motherbord in order to install it?
Same for the new CNPS7000B-Cu, which is not on the U.S. market yet.

Any comment and recommendation?

The socket 940 on the motherboard looks like this.

BTW, is there any program that can read out each CPU's temp? I only have Windows 64bit beta
and Solaris 9 installed on this box.

Thanks in advance!

Yeah, the case is nice ... I wish there's place for side fan(s) though.

Still looking for CPU fan suggestions ...

That doesn't look like a standard Athlon64\Opteron mounting system...

No it's not standard. That's why I haven't found any alternative heatsink for them. :(

I'm going to be receiving my w2100z at the end of the month and since it's going to be sitting on the table next to me I'm on the lookout for a quiet cooling rig as well.

If I find one I'll post back to this thread for you ... let me know if you get any updates as well?

The motherboard is made by Wistron ... they're an ODM so you won't find any Wistron branded boards.

However the motherboard in the w?100z boxes is the same as that in IBM's Intellistation A Pro, so if you find something that is meant to work in the IBM box (I haven't yet but have just begun searching) then chances are very good it will work in the Sun box.

The IBM box is probably selling more volume (I work at Sun, and I think the w?100z boxes offer better configs, but I'm also being a realist about workstation volumes in the current market ;) so you may have better luck searching for that one or finding a cooler manufacturer that is familiar with it.

If you could take the metal retention plate off the board, see if there's the two standard Athlon 64\Opteron mounting hole.
