Just a little note to say I finally found stores listing the Opteron 244 as in stock. Even NewEgg now lists it (they only listed the 240 for the past 2+ months). This is a good sign that AMD has finally got its yields up on the higher frequency chips. Hopefully this means the 3400+ Athlon 64 might not be paper lauched like the Opteron 242 and 244 were.

New Egg

Yes I know other stores have priced it since the launch in late April, but when trying to buy it, they always give you an out of stock, or backorder notice.

it's not cheap, but it's also not directed at the general consumers, but the server market

I think it has some relief on the way.
A) One reason AMD probably priced it high since AMD knew it couldn't produce many and didn't want a bunch of consumers angry that they couldn't buy this 244 chip. Now that it looks like production is ramping up AMD can reduce the price.
B) In the last week the number of companies listing the 244 on pricewatch has doubled. As more and more companies selling it, competition will help reduce the price a bit.
C) The Opteron 246 might be released in 1 month. This will likely push down prices a bit.
D) A new 3.06 GHz 1 MB cache Xeon launched in just over a week will be much more competitive in the server areas that the Opteron did well in. This new Xeon will likely be in the lower $700 range - that means AMD will need to cut prices to stay competitive.
E) With the launch of the new Xeon the 512 kB cache Xeons will be drastically reduced in price.

Now if only Opteron motherboards with AGP and PCI-X would come into availability, and if US$3000 would magically appear in my wallet, then I'd be all set. ;)

I'm running XP Pro on my 240s and it runs just fine. Remember the chip is backwards compatible and will run 32 bits OSes just fine until the 64 bit versions make it out.

And don't forget you can download a 64 bit version of RedHat today! If you want to run linux, you have lots of options.

Someone else mentioned AGP... I'm running with an NVidia GeForce FX 5200 (PCI) and pulling 70 to 90 fps in UT at 1024x768 w/32 bit. Maybe I could go faster w/AGP, but that's fast enough for me! :)

One should be sitting down with a shot of one's favorite cold, tasty, alcoholic beverage before viewing those prices.

The only OS around that still doesn't support 64-bit is windows. *shrug*
Not quite; Windows supports Itanium, but only with server editions (and maybe a hybrid server-professional edition), IIRC. It just doesn't support x86-64, yet.

What do you do with your PC that takes advantage of dual Opterons? Is it for work?

Correct... It will be Q3 or Q4 before the beta releases of WinXP64 or 2003-64 are released.

but like I said in an earlier post, don't let that stop you.. you can still run a Windows box now on Opterons and be rock solid.

I'm kinda thinking that this will be a repeat of the Tbred 1700+ vs. 2800+ issue: why pay ~$300 for the 2800 when you can pay $40 for the 1700 and overclock it to 2800 specs without so much as a voltage bump?

I'm not sure how well the Opteron 240's overclock, but I'd imagine that these CPUs can get pretty close to the 1.8 GHz mark with ample cooling and some extra voltage. I guess I'll find out on Monday, when my new mobo comes. :)

The only *consumer* OS, I should have said. No consumer-level windows versions support 64-bit, afaik. Damn, even apple is 64 bit now :p

I needed the ram and horsepower for a project I'm working on... if you have to upgrade, buy ahead! ;) My old system didn't have enough horses to get the job done in a timely manner.

Buying a 64 bit platform gets me a lot of expandibility moving forward... I'm parsing and mining 44 gigs of bio data, so yes, I probably will end up stocking out the 12 gigs the motherboard can handle. Currently, I've got 2. With most P4 or Athlon motherboards, that would be all it would take. I know there are P4 boards that can handle more but I would have paid just as much as I did for the Opterons.

At my last job, I worked building a bio database that had over a quarter billion rows when I left, so I've played in this area before.

So, if you need ram, go Opteron... don't let the lack of a current 64 bit version of Windows stop you. You don't need it. And when it does come out, you can take advantadge of the platform even more. That excuse is rolled out quite often and it's not valid. If you are a Linux person, it's in 64 bit already. If you are a Windows person, the OS you have will run there.

howzat?

Sounds pretty hotttt. :p

Hats off to your great system! :D But I think the real question all comes down to this...How well can it play solitaire? ;) J/K

All I can say is :: drool ::

The only article I've seen is this on Opteron overclocking. Due to many reasons (server board without voltage adjustment being the biggest) they do not overclock well at all.

Looks like I was right in my Opteron price slash predictions.
