Hello all. I beginning plans for a dual opteron 270 workstation that I will be building toward the end of the year. In my search I came across low power edition of these chips.

The standard opteron 2** is 95W at a 1.30/1.35V core. The HE edition is 55W at 1.15V. My question is at that low Wattage/Voltage what kind of temps can I expect? What kind of drop in energy bill as well?

Another thing. AMD pricing sheet puts these things at $1,300 a pop. Monarch has them for a lowly $825. Is that something I should jump on? My concern is the rarity of these things. I know prices will drop by the time I want to build but will i be able to find them. Thanks in advance.

I would really reccomend going for two 265s--they're only ~320 if you buyt hem OEM, ~340 if you buy them retail. (www.flickerdown.com)

Also, as for the wattage question--the low wattage chips are designed for 'super-servers', large clusters, etc.

Most server owners realize they'll spend more money on the electricity for the racks than the components in them (or at least a substantial amount of cash will come from the electricity bill)

Look at it this way:
Assuming that you pay .10/kwhr, going from the 95W version to the 55W version would be a 40W decrease..
40W = .04kw x24 x365 x$.10 = $35.04
You'll save 35 bucks if you go with the lower power version. (Not worth the cost to you)

A giant server owner, with a thousand of them....
The costs add up ;) Hence why the Itanics and Xeons are so hot anymore.. (ignore the pun!)

never mind flickdown has the OEM. GREAT PRICES! Two for one almost if you compare to newegg or monarch. This guy is legit huh? He doesn't seem to have them in stock right now and i can't find a way to contact him. Any other OEM sites thanks!
