Opteron 1xx vs 2xx vs 8xx

Sorry for the noob question. I am current looking to upgrade my computer. I was looking at the different Opterons out there. the 1xx, 2xx and 8xx models. I was just look through a couple of them, and with my (lack of) knowlegde. I can't see much difference in these three processors.

Can somebody please explain to me the difference in those 3 CPUs other than the pins. I would like to know the performance different in the three and which does what best in terms of gaming, stability, encoding, etc.

Also, I am looking to spend around $300 for a processor. Does anybody have any good recommendations?? I am not looking to overclock anything too much as I am not planning to get water cooling for my comp. I am trying to keep it as quite as possible.

Oh yeah, I am going to be using my computer mainly for video encoding / decoding and also game playing as well. I usually play mmorpg games such as Final Fantasy XI and World of Warcraft. In addition to that, I am looking to setup a dual-monitor setup with 2 20' widescreen at max resolution. Thats pretty much it what im gonna do with my comp.

Any opinions/suggestions is welcome. Thanks in advance.

I'm thinking...1xx are for single chip systems. 2xx are for dual processor and 8xx are for 4 and 8 processor boards?

The first digit refers to the max number of processors in the server, I believe.

so if they're put to a one-to-one processor test ( if possible), they'll performance is about the same??

anybody suggestion of which processor i should get? I not just looking at opty only, im considering athlon too.

If you look at prices, you'll know what to do, I think. You want the dual core opty 1 series. Like 165, 170, 175.

Yes, I do want a dual core. I dont care too much for the prices. I want to best bang for the buck.

performance will be the same unless you go with two dual core processors. the boards are much more expensive to.

No ocing?? would say get an 805D...if you need a bit more power for single core task and still no ocing get a P-D 920....

Intel is cheaper at the low end of dual core...hence low end means lowest of performance of dual core chips...

If you want a bit more power, then...

If you get spend 300+ get the 3800+ X2...as a 2ghz athln core is far superior to a 533fsb 2.66ghz of a P4 design....

However bang for buck is the 805D....I wouldn't own one, but they are good options for others.

Im don't want intel, they gave me too much problems. Im sticking with AMD. I am actually looking for a stable processor that will perform. I don't mind oc-ing is a little but im not looking to oc an opty 165 to 3.0 or 2.8. If i do end up with an opt 165, i would probably bring it to 2.4-2.6 at the most.

Let me know.

Also, if you have any suggestions on other config for the rest of the comp please let me know.

another noob questions, is there usually a limit on the amount of HD space a motherboard can support? im looking to get around 1500 GB using 4 HDs for storage.
Do most MB support that much HD space? does it even matter at all??

that should be fine, the limit to HDD space is really in the OS.

anyways, Opty 1XX series is what you want.

Well that is cool...At 2.6ghz you would have needed to the 805D and 920 to be 4ghz and that is not always easy and adds to the cost...bang for the buck goes out the window eventually...

I will probably be using Windows XP SP2 until vista comes out. Does anybody know if Win XP SP2 have any HDD space limit? how about vista?

Also, any suggestions on a motherboard?

Plus, whatever happened to FSB on AMD? (noob question again)

They are.
Before I got my new Lenovo T2300 notebook, I was running an 820D on a P5LD2 board, it was the best possible setup for the $, I'm convinced. It ran like a champ and cost very little to put together. For low end dual core market, Intel owns it.
