Hi,

In this AnandTech article, AMD Opteron 248 vs. Intel Xeon 2.8: 2-way Web Servers go Head to Head the authors state "there is very little stopping an Opteron 100 CPU from being used in a dual processor environment (an Opteron 100 is identical to an Opteron 200 and an Opteron 800)". Can anyone confirm or deny this? I am trying to determine what systems to put together for a home beowulf cluster and the Opteron 144 can be had for $232, while the 244 runs about $412, which probably puts the opteron out of my price range.

Thanks for the help!

Possibly, but I think AMD disable the extra HT links for other CPU's in 1xx series, rendering 2-way usage impossible. Or so ive read, not sure about in practise.

it used to be the case that they didn't lock the processor to single only but now they do so you have to spend the money for a 2xx if you want to go dual

Nope, that's an old article. Whenever you read something like that, you have to hop on the wagon quickly. Since then, AMD has started "hard" locking the multis on all of their cpu's, and it seems that they found out about people doing that with the Opterons and made them mod-proof. It required a mod even back then, which immediately destroys your warranty, and has a high likelihood of ruining the chip. A few different people have reported in the last few months that it no longer works. Although, a 1.6ghz Opteron is only around $175 at newegg: link. And even a single Opteron would give you a pretty decent system.
