Hey ppl.

I currently run a 3700 SD @ 2.80GHz and im planning to replace it with an Opty 185. I hear the opty 165s are very good overclockers, are the 185s the same? Can they go well into 3GHz+? Help appreciated.

I bet you can get it to 3 ghz or so, it probably depends on the cooling you're going to use. I'd check overclockers.com cpu database and see what that comes up with for that processor.

tankguys.biz tells steppings of the AMD processors. Than you can compare them, to find a good overclocker.

They say as the product gets more production on AMD plant, it becomes a better overclocker, compared to the very first opteron 185's. I'm guessing that opty should be able to do 3.0 like other poster says..

The 185 will probably not have much headroom compared to the lower models of it's series. On air, I wouldn't expect more than 3Ghz, and more likely closer to 2.8. The only reason to get such a chip is for the high multiplier if you need it. A 170 or 175 would still be a better deal as a 10 or 11 multiplier will still get you to 3Ghz easily on most boards and it is very unlikely you will be able to push it higher without phase-change cooling.

Most Opties will max out around 2.8ghz without further exotic cooling...

I wouldn't have high hopes for the 185 to OC like a champ. I myself would bet 2.75ghz.
