Opteron 175 or 170?

hi, As you can see I am new to these forums. I know you have been asking this question a lot, but I encountered to many different opinions.

I have ordered the next:

Zalman 9500 CPU cooler
Opteron 175


Consider that they will be in an MSI Neo 4 Platinum + OCZ 2x1Gb Platinium 2-3-2-5-


But the thing is that I haven't read enough before buying, now I am worried if I had waste my money, because I could went for a 170 instead.

BUT! I had a small oportunity to change to 170 if I call tomorrow to the shop, what are your opinions? BTW.. there is a difference of 136 USD between 175 and 170, pretty much. (I live in Argentina)

What do you think? Is it better to stick with the 175 or is just a waste of money? Then turn to the 170?

For an extra 200 mhz per core I don't think it is worth the difference.

If you overclock at all, and given your choice in RAM, CPU cooler, and motherboard, it looks like you will, you will easily be able to make up the difference between a 170 and a 175 with even a mild overclock.

Save the $136 for another upgrade.

If you plan to overclock, get the 170. If you are not, keep the 175.

yes yes yes... I know I know.. I just cant believe it. I hope I can change the decision...

The PSU.. Antec truepower, the rest of the hardware.. all is pointing to the 170 .. and it seems like 170 overclock to higher clocks if you get a nice stepping.. and it use to happens.

I know a guy that have "recently" bought a 175 and he is at 2.6.. needing big bump in vcore.. and with air coooling thats quiet impossible to handle.. aparently the 170 can reach 2.8 (like 175) or even higher with a nice cooler like zalman 9500, despite of the 175.. cant it?

is it true that dual-cores sometimes have issues with one specific core. For example, in a bench you can run prefectly core 1 but in core 2 it gives an error or such. I've read that some of the 170 buyers got this a few times.. is it possible?

Sure it's possible. If it happens at stock speeds it is a warranty issue.

If you are overclocking, it is pretty much a given that one core will cause errors before the other..

Well It is done... I put down the 175 and ask for a 170. I fell much better now! By the way, the worse overclock one can get with these 170 is like the best of the 175 (2.6 mostly, sadly).. so it would have been very sad to say "OMG, I have just burned 140 USD"

At least I know what I can expect from a 170.
