These seem to be about the same price when I configure an Alienware notebook. What's better?

Opteron 170 runs at 2GHz and the 4400+ at 2.2GHz. Both have 1MB L2 cache per core.

4400+ it is.

Maybe you need to be a bit more specific. You want to know what CPU to take at the virtually same price for your customized alienware notebook, right? Do you want to overclock your notebook with a desktop CPU?
If the answer is no, get the 4400+ if it costs the same - simply because it runs a little faster at stock speed. If the answer is yes, I wonder why you want a notebook anyway. :)

If heat is an issue:

Because the opteron's are usually better parts, u may want one in a notebook simply because you will probably be able to lower the voltage at stock speeds and your notebook wont get as hot.

They are better parts as in they are validated for professional use. You wont see much of a difference between the two at same speed. I mean, I can run my 4400+ at 1.3V @ 2.4GHz... and currently run at 1.39V @ 2.5GHz. The real difference here is the stock clockspeed. Something I wouldnt fiddle around with in a notebook, even if its meant to be a desktop replacement and thus wont run alot on batteries. They are seriously limited in terms of heat dissipation.

I'm on the road a lot and I want a portable gaming rig. Any overclocking done will be minimum at best.
