Hi,

I just bought a new retail Opteron 170. When I ordered it, the SKU was: OSA170CDBOX. I just received it and see that the number underneath the AMD Opteron is: OSA170DAA6CD. But it's in a retail box and has the retail heatsink and fan. When I search for OSA170DAA6CD, I see that it's the OEM CPU. Does this sound right; or does this smell fishy??

OSA170DAA6CD Is AMD's number for this model.. Retailers add ' BOX ' to designate retail package.. It's retail if you have a ' Certificate of Authenticity ' with a serial number that matches the number on the CPU..

You will not find ' BOX ' on the IHS or actual part of any AMD CPU..

No problems. I had a 3800+ X2 @ 2.6g that died on me, and the 170 is somewhat better with the 2.7 OC anf the bigger Cache..

hey Diogenes2, are you using the operton stock heat sink and fan? if so... how hot is your 170 running idle? and have you tried cool n quiet?

mine is running at 46C idle... w/ no overclocking and stock fan. i want to play around with overclocking... but was wondering if the stock heat sink and fan is good enough.

46 Sounds a little high, idle ( depending on your room temp-- ~ 75F ? ) .. I would suspect that is not an accurate reading if the HSF is installed properly..

With my XP90, I'm in mid 40's under 100% load.. ( I'm always under load with a distributed computing project, so I haven't really monitored my idle tems.. What would be the point of an idle comp? :D)

Some boards don't track temp that well, and I would try to get an accurate baseline before proceeding..

Leave the comp off for a while, then power up and go into BIOS as quick as you can. Temp should be within 3 - 4 of ambient.... Take the difference if any and adjust your monitored temp accordingly.. If you monitor your temp in the BIOS and it goes up real fast, you may not have a good HSF install. If it takes 2 - 3 minutes to stabilize, you are probably O.K...

As long as you stay around 55 or lower I wouldn't be concerned...

You should be able to get at least 2.4 without bumping the voltage, and just the freq increase won't raise your temp as much..

Cooler is always better, but you should be able to get a decent OC with the stock HSF..

Hope that helps..

i am using an asus a8n-vm csm w/ 2gb pqi memory (ultra products 500w modular ps). i took that reading from asus probe after the computer was on all night (read the cpu temp right after i woke up). i remember after about 1hr on a full load, the temp reading from asus probe went up to around 57 degrees.

i was thinking about getting the zalman cnps9500... but that hsf is not too wife friendly. :(
