Hey all,
Just installed my Opty 165 this weekend, and it's still at stock w/ Cool 'n Quiet enabled. With the case and CPU fans going full blast it is idling at 39C. Seems a bit high considering my 3500+ Newcastle idled at 31C. How does this compare to anyone else's measurements? I'm thinking I'll need to remount my HSF.

Edit:
J/K, power management was set to Always On so it wasn't clocking down.

Just received from Egg: CCBWE 0607UPGW

Couldn't turn anything up on Google re: that week/batch, I guess I'll just have to let 'er rip and see. I'll report back, but I'm going offline for a while since I also need to do a system wipe for this (gotta install XP Pro).

I'm currently running at 2.4Ghz stock voltage, 40c idle and 44c load super stable! I'll try to tweak it a bit more if I have the time. 🙂

OC Newbie, need advice please. Planned to go with Opteron 165 based on what I've read. However, going with a shuttle nForce3 mobo; would I be better to go with the X2 3800 because of the 9X issue and my uncertainty about the mobo OC capabilities?

I only plan to OC mildly, like 2.4 on air. No gaming, just multimedia: TV recording, video encoding, etc. I believe the dual proc will be great for the multi-tasking nature of my uses. I probably don't even NEED to OC, but why not? I wanna play... 🙂

Thx, Bently

I bit the bullet and went back to the 3800+ X2. My 165@2.4Ghz would hit 57C or so on full load, and PWM temps would reach 85C. Switched mobo to a KN8 SLi and the PWM temps went down to a respectable 60C, but the board had cold boot issues. So I said screw it, and returned to the mobo and plan on selling the 165. Dropped in my new X2@2.4Ghz and load temps are 44C, PWM 53C. Only a 9% performance drop from the 165 at the same speed, but 38% difference in pwm temps and 23% CPU temps on the same board. The 165 would OC like a mofo tho. Had it to 2.6, but couldnt keep the temps down. Probably just a "bad" chip. 😛

Wow 85C PWM, that is quite toasty. What mobo was that on and what stepping/date was that 165?

From what I've read it does seem like the Optys like to draw a bit more power and run hotter than X2's in general.

The 165 is 0606VPMW and the board was an Asus A8N-E. The KN8 ran a little cooler, but it was still in the 60's. Just thinking about the summer when the room temps are in the 90's (F), as I dont have AC.

All I know about mine so far is: it won't boot @ 2.5 on stock volts. Faults out immediately. Disappointing, but I have it under a Storm Rev. 2 waterblock, so I can beat it with the voltage stick fairly hard if I choose. I'm not holding my breath for 300 * 9 though.
