Opteron 165 & S&M - WTF

So here I am testing out my computer making sure it is stable... I tried running 2.6ghz @ default voltage... passing with all other tests except for this. Thinking this program knew something that the other programs didn't, I tried at 2.5 and 2.4 with the same result. Core 1 (and only core 1) failing at the FPU test (second time around, not the first)...

So getting a little curious, I set my CPU to the default speed (1.8ghz) and it STILL fails the FPU test on the second time around...

What is going on? Is this program faulty? Keep in mind even at 2.7Ghz, only Core 1 fails, not Core 0.

WTFBBQ?

Thanks,
Bill

Suppose this is the case, does AMD warranty anything like that?

well if core 1 does fail at stock, then that means there's a chance you should be able to RMA it to them.

Has anyone here had any experience with AMD's RMA process? I personally never have and would be going in blind... The thing that confuses me is Prime95 and SuperPI 32m are both stable... So is there ANY chance it is S&M?

Thanks,
Bill

how long did you run prime95? did prime pass on both cores oc'ed too?

The AMD RMA process is a bit tedious, but it's very good. I had a new processor in about a week.
Just go to their website, sign up for an account, then register your processor, then RMA it.

I glanced at AMD's return policy and because I bought OEM I have to go through the reseller to get a new one. That should not be a problem because I only got in a month or so ago...

This is why stress-testing your CPU at stock before you overclock is a good idea *) But, if it's failing at stock speeds, you should be able to RMA it somehow.

I am going on 10+ hours of Prime95 as we speak

have ya got the AMD dual core fix installed? i red about somebody else not beeing able to pass 2.6 because 1 core keeps failing, the fix later and it ran 2.7 easy on both.

if 1 core keeps failing that might be it... else its a dud.

the latest s&m was a problem on my x2. it kept failing me at some point because it read my voltages as too low. i ran it a few times with a dmm hooked up and the volts were fine. and every other stability test passed so i don't bother with s&m on my x2.

Ill try that out. I just passed 21 hours of dual prime... I have trouble believing it is the chip... I will try out this dual core fix... Thanks :)

What tests did you try?

you could try an older version of S&M, some people have had problems with the newer ones being buggy
