Opteron 165 or 175 Poll - HELP ME DECIDE!!!!

I'm trying to get a feel for what opty 170 n 175 equals to in X2 performance.

I only got a $300 budget. I have my ddr1 400, asus a8n-sli premium m/b, pci-e x300

Only thing I need now is a cpu so help me choose everyone

Opteron 170 = X2 4000+
Opteron 175 = X2 4400+

There is absolutely no performance difference at the same frequencies between them. Now, for 165 vs 3800+, assuming no overclocking involved, 3800+ will be no slower than 165. In other words, X2 3800+ >= Opteron 165. If you're into OC, chances are the Opteron will come out on top by a sizeable margin.

I have my Opteron 165 at 3.0 on air. Opteron will OC much better if you are into that sort of thing.

What is the minimum I can overclock if I get an opty 165 or 175 with an a8n-sli, 2x512 ddr 400 corsair value ram, ati x300 gpu, and a corsair hx620?

It's different for each chip, but I have yet to see one out of the recent batches that DIDN'T do 2.6 at or near stock volts.

Opterons generally are better overclockers and it has 2 x 1MB cache instead of 2 x 512k in the 3800+.

Yes, and as far as guaranteed overclock; I'd say you have a 99% chance of at least getting 2.2 even if you get the absolute worst stepping (I got that, and it will do 2.4 stock, anything over that requires big bumps in vcore for every 100mhz)

Edit: Maybe I will revise that statement and just say that i have one of the worst steppings, and those are my results with it.

I'm too poor for anything!!! That's why just debating over an opty or a cheezy amd 3700+. I can't stand my prescott system corrupting my data.

Help me decide guys.

AMD 3700+ Retail - $79
Opty 165 Retail - $154
Opty 170 Retail - $189
Opty 175 OEM - $179

I already have a Zalman 9500 AM2 from CompUSA for $45 from their sale which I can return.

P.S. All advice are appreciated - It will be replacing my unstable Prescott. This system will end up being a hard disk server mid 2008 hopefully but will be my main rig for EVERYTHING til then.

Hands down the Opty 165 is going to win this battle. an X2 4800+ is a very poor Overclocker and would be lucky to get 150mhz - 200mhz over its stock speed, if that much at all

Return the 9500, all the Opty Dual Cores come with a very respectable Heatpipe/fan cooler. Not your typical Stock Cooler. If you need more cooling power just unscrew the 80mm fan, pick up a cheap 80-120mm adapter and screw on a 120mm fan, I have that setup now and it cools great, blows air through the heatpipes, right onto the CPU baseplate, plus the area surrounding the CPU socket

Cooler may look like this (there are a few variations)

okey heres the bottom 2 chips u should be looking at, and ditch the rest.

X2 4400+ (89W) <--- this is a hella sweet chip.

Opty 175 OEM --> i picked one up because i had a spare DFI, and at 179.99 for an opty its a steal.

The steppings I GOT FROM NEWEGG

CCBBE0617EPMW

right now she's prime stable 24h at
250x11 = 2.75ghz
ram divider at 9/10
voltage reported by cpu-z 1.295V



ahem... that should speak for itself. :]

Also your gonna need that cooler as the chip is OEM, meaning no Cooler.


HOWEVER my QX6700 will spank this opty... and so will any C2D.

If you compare X2 3800 then Opty 165 then you should go for Opty 165, they both have dual core but opty comes with 2x1Mb cache memory, so it should be faster with it larger internal cache.
In my opinion larger cache really mean good improvement in overall peroformance.

And don't compare to C2D since they are more pricey .....if you've got a lot of budget I think its time to go C2D.
I used AMD for years but now since the using of DDR2 I think AMD has to give Intel a lead in perfomance and overclocking matter.
For value/performance wise, AMD still give good standing than Intel.

This was one of the first batches of 4800+. (June 2005)
Granted Opteron 165 is still a much better value but most 4800+ did 2.70GHz+ as far as I remember.

There is no comparison - 165 all the way.

My CPU adventure:

1. A64 3000+ - First up was this little Venice chip at 2.5ghz but was not happy with it.
2. X2 3800+ - Next up was the X2 but it didn't impress me at an OC of 2.4ghz. It just couldn't go any higher.
3. FX-55 - Got the FX bug - Fairly nice chip and OC'd to 2.8ghz without a sweat. I wanted a dual-core so I went searching for that perfect chip again.
4. Opteron 165 - Match made in heaven. It boots right up @ 3.0ghz but I decided to stay at 2.8ghz. I couldn't be happier.

175 because u might get lucky and get the same stepping as i did. Even then most 175's can do 2.6ghz with little to no voltage increase.

Also I bought this CPU 1 week ago.


Opty's use a better silicon to what i hear then a X2.
