The 165 has a 9x multiplier and the 170 a 10x multipier.

So, your motherboard would have to be able to handle high fsb speeds to overclock the 165 to say 2.6ghz = 289mhz as opossed to 260mhz fsb with a 170.

It depends on stepping, but the 170 should overclock better than the lower rated 165. Again I stress that results may vary depending on the chip.

Personally, I went for a 170 as my mobo isn't the best and I wanted a kinda guaranteed decent overclock.

Well in overclocking its always good to have the lowest possible multiplier so you can up the FSB more...but for a ~$70 difference between the two is not worth it imo.

DO WHAT? Higher multipliers are better because they can be lowered if needed. You will need a good motherboard if you go with the 165. DFI infinity or Ultra for around $80 should do the trick.

Actually a overclock of say.. 289x9 would be faster than a overclock of 260x10. Highest fsb per highest clock speed is the rule of thumb to use.

Multipliers just make the CPU easier to overclock. If you've got a good OCin mobo like a DFI lanparty or Asus A8n, get the 165.

true, but if one does not know the capabilities of their motherboard, it would be best to buy the cpu with the higher multiplier since you can always lower the multiplier (but not increase it except the FX series)...

As long as you stick with a good OCing mobo, teh 165 is the best value.
