This is with the case open, too. Any ideas why it would be running so hot? I used arctic silver, and it looks like the cooler is seated properly.

I'm hoping that maybe it's reporting it wrong, and a BIOS upgrade will show me a much lower temp.

When running in the BIOS the cpu heats up. Due to, I think, lower power states not activiated until you enter windows (someone correct me if I'm wrong).

But anyway you'll need to boot into windows and use your temp monitoring software.

I have no clue why it's so high. I cleaned off the cpu and reinstalled it with some better applied thermal goop. I've updated the BIOS to the latest version. I'm idling at about 44 in Windows with the fan at 40%. Under load, it was hitting 60 at about 75%.

Airflow might be a serious problem. =/
Mind showing us some pictures?

Opterons run hot in general... an X2 might have been a better choice, less cache, less heat.
Edit: 3800+ model was what I was getting at. It's the Opty equivalent of a 165.

Half of the x2s have the same amount of cache as the opterons. Opterons run on lower volts, too. So, no, you're quite wrong.

Let me correct myself, 3800+ models only.

If I set my old 165 on it's 4 Heatpipe HSF at stock volts/Mhz; and set my new X2 on its crap aluminum HSF; stock volts/Mhz, my X2 will have a higher idle, but a lower load.

Care to make a guess as to why?
