Would like to get one from Tank Guys, but they don't take Paypal. Also, considering Dave, but would like to hear about recent acquisitions from ZZF, Egg, Mwave and Monarch.

Thanks

:) What steppings do you have on the 165 retail? Heard good things about 0550 VPMW(?). Got a real itchy mouse finger right now:D

We have 2 at the moment:

CCBWE 0551 UPMW
CCBWE 0551 VPMW

You'll be a bit hard pressed to find any 0550's since they're an "older" week now, but it's possible that Monarch/ZZF/NewEgg may still have some, but it'd be a luck of the draw. I have heard though that if you call Monarch and are really lucky, they'll sometimes tell you the stepping. You may want to see if they have any 0550's first :)

You have to be REALLY lucky. I called and they wouldn't tell me anything about chip stepping. I do appreciate that about Tankguys, you basically know what stepping you're getting before you even order.

TankGuys has some of the best customer service I've ever had the pleasure of experiencing. Buy from them! :p The 0551 chips look to me decent overclockers, ~2.7Ghz on average.

which one if either seems to be more consistent? CCBWE 0551 UPMW or CCBWE 0551 VPMW. I'm in the market for one right now myself.

165 CCBWE 0551 UPMW was good to me on my first purchase. I hit 2.73Ghz @ 1.45v on air. I'll let you know on the next one that will be arriving Wednesday from TankGuy's.

When you are looking at a specific processor (The 165, for example) there are the options just above the "Reviews" and "Add to cart" buttons. There are pull down menus to select thermal grease, a motherboard, and the stepping. We list right there which steppings are available for any given processor.

We don't have that info for a lot of processors though, because we can only list the ones I physically have in stock at any given time, and I only order based on demand... so right now, I just have stepping info for the Opteron 146/165/170 OEM processors right now.

yes, i noticed that. its a great feature.

i was talking more about how well they overclock compared to other steppings. the reviews of the stepping seem to be pretty good. i read a couple guys got them to 2.7-2.75 while one topped out at 2.4.

Another one for the 0551 UPMW...see sig.
Core0 does crap out past 2700 quite fast, Core1 runs like a champ with 2800. Currently my temps are too high to consider more voltage...have to upgrade my watercooling first I guess :D
Anyway, the stepping is good...as long as I can pass the "officially" fastest chip, the FX-60 :p

look at the reviews... people claim to have up to 2.8 ghz... newegg seems to be selling good processors...

beware of newegg..who says the cpu are stable...

I can get mine into winxp at 2800 but itvis not stable in prime 95....also 2800 require 310+ FSB....so you will need a good mobo

Always remember OC YMMV..not everyone get 2600,2700,2800....

On a side note, are there any really "bad" weeks/steppings out there like the "CABGE" that I should avoid at all costs?

on another sidenot, i was thinking about getting the mushkin redline 2x1GB XP4000 kit for my dfi ultra-d and the opty 165, heard nothing but great things about the memory and it's oc abilities, but is it worth the cost. Sorry for the hijack.

that is up to you..perfromance wise the cpu speed is most important but there are so who need ram that does 1:1 speeds or close to it...but remember the memory controller is on the chip....there are so apps that will benefit from faster ram

I use crucial valuram..it was over the summer the best bang for the buck in 2 x 1gb sticks...I am thrilled with it

You are better off putting the money into a faster videocard or pocketing it for a future upgrade

This is the last piece of the new system, not going to be any upgrades for quite some time as it's already pretty top of the line. Here are the specs.

Antec P160
Antec NeoPower NeoHE550w Modular PS
DFI Ultra-D
WD 150GB Raptor
ATI Radeon X1900XT 512MB GDDR3 PCI E
Opty 165
2 optical DVD-RW's one Lite On with lightscribe, the other NEC newer model
Mem is the last thing and i think i'm gonna go ahead and go with the mushkin redline, invested enough already so might as well get one last top quality part.

wow..nice setup, if you are spending on those items , I cant disagree with getting high end ram

not sure it will matter much but why not?

I'd get a 170 0546XPMW. I know it's OEM but I'm sure you're using an after-market cooler? It's only $50 difference and you get a more predictable, and decent (one of the best, indeed) OC.
