Opteron 165/AGP recommendations?

Due to a moment of weakness, I have an Opteron 165 on its way, but I need to find a decent motherboard to partner it with....fast!

I'd like to find one that will run my X800GT AGP, Corsair 3200, and 520wt TTGI 20-pin PSU.

would the ASRock 939Dual-SATA2 or ASUS A8V Socket 939 VIA K8T800 Pro work, or are there better options I should consider? Would appreciate any help, I don't have the luxury of time to research all my options! Thanks!

also, the nforce3 boards arn't bad either. If you will OC, you might consider a newer board type.

The ASRock board will work fine, I'm running my Opty 170 at 2.6GHz on it right now. It's nice to have an upgrade path for PCI-E on the same motherboard too. Just as a word of caution, to get the most out of the board's overclocking/voltage, you'll need to do a simple voltmod (connecting two tiny solder pads with conductive pen ink). If that's not your thing (and 1.4V/~2.4GHz won't be enough for you), NF3 boards would perform quite well too (as snor mentioned), but of course you'd have to replace the motherboard when you want to upgrade your video card.

I do plan to do some overclocking....but if I can only get a moderate clock for now, that's fine with me. I'm planning on this being a temporary solution so I can slowly aquire my memory, mobo, PSU and vidcard.

IMO the ASRock will work well for you then...the default voltage options aren't that great, but I was able to get my 170 up to 2.4GHz right out of the box (before I voltmodded)...has a regular "old" ATX 20-pin connection so your PSU will be fine. I'm quite happy with my board (some might even say I'm somewhat biased towards it 😛), but for all you get for $65, I find it hard not to recommend it...

Thanks for the info guys, the ASrock appears to be a great board from what I've heard, so now I've got one on it's way. I'll be thrilled if I can hit 2.4 with it for now, which sounds like a decent possibility.

Hi there,

I am still using my MSI K8N Neo2 Plat board with the new Opteron 165 I just got. I am hitting 2.5 with 1.35v with it. I am using a X800XT PE with it. This board seem to over-volt. When I run cpu-z, the voltagefor the processor varies from 1.38-1.41. I wonder if this is normal.

The rest of my specs are: 9x279, 3xHTT, 2 GB ram at 2.7v 2.5-3-3-8.

I am playing Q4, SC: Pandora Tomorrow, COD2 with no problems. Also encoding movies with no problems.

I am looking for a board to use with an opty 170. Unsure about the DFI due to it's "pickyness" and also that I will probably not be doing an OCing, and haven't in the past. ASUS A8N32-SLI?
