opteron 165 @ 2.7ghz question

Let me start by saying I used to o/c stuff back in the days of the P166, but since then I've been a stock guy. After a conversation with a friend about the Opterons and how much performance people are getting out of them for the price, I decided it was time to get back into the game... but things have changed a lot.

So I ordered a new computer from Newegg and got most of it last Friday, with my cooler-master freezer 64 pro coming today. With the stock HSF, I was running @ 2610mhz at 1.45v (prime95 success @ 24 hours). CPU temp was ~45C under load.

With the new HSF I can get 2700mhz @ 1.55v and the temperature is comparable (~46C under load). I've tried lower voltages, but it fails prime pretty quickly with some rounding errors. At 1.55v it's been running prime for about a half hour with no problems.

Would you guys recommend keeping it at 2700mhz? I see the benefits as such:
1. RAM gets to run at 200mhz instead of 193mhz
2. more SPEED!
3. 2.7 sounds nicer than 2.6

The cons, as I've seen from reading these forums:
1. 1.55v is a bit high for a dual core (lifespan issues)

What would you experts recommend?

I would reccomend dropping it back to 1.45 volts. You may be able to squeeze some more speed out of it later as the thermal paste cures.

The actual stable clockspeed increas from 1.45v to 1.55v is not very much for the added damage risk....I wouldn't go above 1.5v personally but that is me...

I can actually run my chip at 2.4ghz at like 1.34v...Temps never climb up to the mid 40's under 24 hour load of 2 instances of FH.....

For a dual core, it really isn't worth it...
The 100Mhz won't be appreciable, and the extra voltage really isn't worth it.

I'd say drop it back down to 2.6 @ 1.45v, it'll be much better for the chip and your heat will go down noticeably.

thanks for the advice guys, dropped it back to 2610 at 1.45v and it's going strong :)

got the same chip and running mine at 2610 (290x9) @ 1.425v. i really wanted 2700 but it required over 1.5v and its not worth the extra waste of power/heat. i too am crying on the inside. we're such geeks. haha.

dont feel bad I have mine running at the same speeds and vcore. I was wondering what kinda ram you're running? because im running a set of 2x1gb Muskin XP4000 and got the same ram speed as you.
