Hey guys,

I've been looking to upgrade from my 3000+ Winnie @ 2.5, and I know I want to move to dualies. So, here's me dumb-ass questions.

1) What exactly is the difference between a Opteron and an X2? Is there any difference in core architecture, cache, die, whatnot?

2)I'm a gamer primarily... if there is an difference in architecture, which one would be the wiser purchase? (165 v. 3800 x2 for instance)

3)Finally, what's the difference between say, a 145 and a 165? Just clock speed? What about a 165 and a 265 or a 865? Not that I have the money to buy those... you'd need an amount akin to the gross national product of Sri Lanka.

Thanks for you answers in advance.

1) no difference in architecture. All dual core opterons have 2 x 1mb cache. Opterons are tested more than X2s.

2)In games the x2 will run a little faster if both are at stock speed (1.8 for the 165 vs. 2.0 for the x2 3800). But the 165 can easily overclock to 2.0, then it would be better because of the 2 x 1mb cache

3)A 144 or 146 are single core opterons. The 165, 170,175,180 are dual core opterons. THe 265 is a socket 940 opteron which you do not want for gaming. It uses registered ram which is slower. ALso you would have to get a socket 940 board.

GO with the 165 or the 170 and overclock the crap out of it.

1) opterons are higher quality and built for stabilty and the cache is bigger
2) gaming really isnt cpu dependent but these things oc like crazy higher clock speed is better in gaming
3)the 145 isnt dual core i belive and the 165 is.

Sry if this sounds dumb but what do you mean by stepping?
I was considering getting a 165 and stumbled across this page and i didn't know what stepping is.

Is it really important?

Yeah I was also thinking of getting a 165. I was thinking of getting it at either Monarch or Tigerdirect because newegg is out of the question so do these places have good 165's?

You can never know. Generally, the older the better so a reseller with slower moving stock or more recently dropped price might be a good bet.

Sorry to impose, but have a question regarding optys - I just bought a 148 opty, and now I can find a 165 for about 100 dollars more, but I'd have to return the 148 for about 30 bucks. You guys think this is worth it, or just keep the 148? thanks. Or, in other words, would you go out 30 bucks to pick up a duel core as opposed to this single core?
