I am upgrading my PC, and until recently was going to purchase a 4000+. I've been reading a lot of articles, and forums regarding Opterons and they have caught my attention as a strong alternative to the 4000+.

I was looking at the AMD Opteron 148 Venus instead of the 4000+. Is that a good choice?
This is going to be a gaming machine, no real multi-tasking to speak of. I will be overclocking the system.

Parts I am considering:
Opteron 148 Venus w/ THERMALRIGHT SI-120
DFI LANPARTY UT nF4 Ultra-D
2x Mushkin eXtreme Performance 1GB DDR500 (PC4000)
ENERMAX Liberty 500w PSU
GeForce 7800 GT

Is there anything in there I should change?
If so, what should I change, and what should I change it to?
Should I switch to a different Opteron?

Any additional advice, suggestions, comments would be GREATLY appreciated. This community is very knowledgable and I would appreciate any extra help very much.

Thanks

Are you planning on any overclocking? If so you can get the same performance much cheaper. Even though it's a gaming computer you might want to look into a dualcore setup, specially if you don't mind overclocking.

The CPU isn't that important when it comes to gameing performance, try looking at the articles in my sig.

biostud... I will be overclocking the system, yes.

Linearsoup... I was going to a 7800 GT for the vid card.

I'm concerned about the RAM and PSU though. I know DFI boards can be picky with things some times. I can't get to dfi-street.com right now, otherwise I would be asking questions over there.

i use the 7800gt which is a good card for the price,it cannot run the newest titles at high res/all eye candy though,ie fear and cod2.they both still look good at lower res with aa though.could wait a few weeks on the vid card and see what the new ones are priced at,im not sure yet if i should flog my gt or sli it,waiting on benchmarks

not sure about the liberty series but enermax are good psus.been looking at this psu myself http://www.silentpcreview.com/article247-page1.html as my antec is a bit on the loud side for me,this or the antec phantom.as your doing to oc on the dfi id just get a 144 as you wont need the higher multi and it should be a safe bet for 2.5 adleast which is more then enough for gaming
