If I can't hand pick my Opteron (single) and I'd like 3Ghz just get the 148?

No idea what my odds are of getting a clocker with anythign lower .... btw is that cooler I have in my sig going to work on this thing?

I'm stuck with shopping with Newegg, I qualify for the payment plans and although my income is decent I...well wtf, I wont go into my finances. It just Newegg for me right now though.... its a crap shoot.

I'll have to see. Its alot of research, all this tech, but its my money so...

3GHz on air is a tall order I think.

If you get a decent stepping 2800-2900 around 1.45-1.5V is doable.

I just got a opteron 165 from Monarch, and it's the great CCBBE 0610 DPMW series ! Known to overclock to 3GHz in most cases. I haven't installed it yet though.

3 Ghz on air is doable on an Opty single core. I had a good one that hit 2.94 Ghz stock volts and stock heatsink. On water 3 Ghz with stock volts and 3.2 Ghz with 1.6 volts.

The newer 148s shouldn't have too much trouble getting to 3 Ghz on air so long as it's good air.

Looking at dual core Opty's only ...going to be a pain picking the FAB. I already have started my research and searching.

CCB1E 0605 XPMW is what I'm hoping to find.

My XP Barton 3200+ and 6800GT cant handle the games anymore.

I ordered my RAM a couple days ago to upgrade what's in my signature.

2x1GB pack of Corsair XMS PC3500 (433Mhz) ...did as much homework before the purchase as I could stand... enough to know this is very high end RAM. It's going to bottle neck in my current system though, something serious.

I just can't keep a stable OC on my Barton, niether one.

CCB1E 0605 XPMW
then
CCBWE 0550 UPMW
then
CCBWE 0551 UPMW

...is that a good order of preference for my Dual Core Opteron picking?

cubeless,

The Thermalright SI-97a CPU cooler does work on an Opteron, Thermalright said so...but I may get somthing else anyway.

A premade set that includes a custom fan... so I get the low noise AND air flow...its hard finding a seperate fan for your heatsink that move the air well without buzz.

if you want high OC's on air you should probably stay away from the CCB1E's. they tend to clock great, but are little furnaces!
The CCBBE's will get to 3Ghz as well, but tend to run cooler. My CCBBE 0610 does 2.7 on stock volts and 2.9Ghz on1.425v. and runs cooler than my opty 148 at the same speeds

the CCBBE is a newer stepping.

Known good steppings that are capable of 3ghz:
CCB1E 0550VPMW
CCBWE 0550UPMW (Some are crappy actually)
CCB1E 0605XPMW
CCB1E 0606VPMW
CCB1E 0608MPMW
CCB1E 0609FPAW
CCBBE 0610DPMW

Honorable Mention:
CCBWE 0530TPMW (2.9ghz avg.)
CCBWE 0546XPMW (2.85ghz avg.)
CCBWE 0609FPAW (Unconfirmed precise averages, but seems to be 2.8-2.9)

AVOID if you want to hit 2.8ghz+:
CCBWE 0534SPMW
CCBWE 0543TPMW
CCBWE 0546MPMW
CCBWE 0551 (Any packing code) (2.7-2.75ghz 1.55v)
CCBWE 0602 (Any packing code)
CCBWE 0607 (Any packing code) (2.65ghz 1.55v)
