opteron 144 or venice 3200?

both are aboutt he same price now, whats the better option for overclocking. opty is slow but has a bigger cache

If you can find the 144, get it. If you read around the forum you'll see that it's clearly the best choice.

yeah, the opteron gets consistantly above 2.8ghz. the venice E3 core (which is no longer sold) got about 2.7, and thats with less cache. the new venice (E4 core) will probably suck at overclocking. so, if you can find the 144, buy it!

IIRC the new core is the E6, and it does not OC as well as the E3s did, 2.5-2.6 seems to be average for the E6s, and 2.5-2.7 for E3s.

Id say if you plan on ocing, you want an opteron definitely.... Dont even think twice about it.

Opteron 144 >> Venice 3200+

That is if you can find one. An Opteron 146 is a good buy as well and $201.63 on Monarch, in stock.

I thought the bp meant that it was a e3 and the bw was the e6
google the model # and e3 seems to pop up in several places

If Opterons are based on the E4 stepping, and new 3200+ Venices will be based on this as well, why does everyone keep saying they are going to suck at overclocking? I'd think that based on the chips that actually are on the E4 stepping, the new 3200+ Venices will overclock even better.

because the new venices will not be the E4 stepping, the new san diegos will.

Venice will still be E6.

Opty 146 is ok, but I look for value. Fry's has sold some 3500 venice cores retail boxed with motherboard for only $199. Granted, the board is not designed for overclocking, but you can try it, or use it for a spare. And the 3200 at about $150 is a bargain. I got mine up to 2400 at the stock voltage, but the ecs board I got from Fry's doesn't go high enough with the voltage to run stable.

Uh... I think you've got that wrong. The San Diegos have already been using the E4, so there's nothing new about that.

But the NEW venices will be the E4 stepping, that's what's new about them.

Wow, i was about to buy the Venice 3200 for my first PC i am building, but now i want to see which is better. I will have the CPU with a eVGA 7800GT and a Raptor 10K 74gb.
BTW, is it easy to overclock these CPUs?

eCost also have the Opteron 146 for $161.94 shipped.

I just called them about the 146's out of curiosity, and they don't have them. Not sure on the 144's though.

Actually I called them just to see if they actually had any 146's. I hadn't seen any shipping for so long, and I figured if they actually had them in stock, and were selling at that price, I'd have to make real good friends with the owner of there

Plester if you read the article that is linked in this thread, the new Venices will be E4 steppings and not E6 any more.

my point is that if you order a venice core chip right now you might very well get an E6.
