Which would be a better one for gaming? I don't think I will overclock much if any. Just wondered if the opteron is really any better than the venice.
just realized that the 142 is socket 940.

If the opteron is better what's a good socket 940 mobo?

I also realize that thisis a stupid question.

You want to be looking at socket 939 opterons not Server derived socket 940 opterons, this will be on normal nForce3 and nForce4 s939 motherboards etc.

single core 1MB L2 cache

144 1.8Ghz
146 2Ghz
148 2.2Ghz
150 2.4Ghz
154 2.8Ghz

Dual core with 2x1MB L2 cache, 1Mb per core

165 1.8ghz
170 2Ghz
175 2.2Ghz
180 2.4Ghz

These opterons are good for OCing, and perform the same against equally spec'ed Athlon 64's, and you most likely will not see much benefit from the extra L2 cache (1MB) that the opteron has over the Venice?s 512Kb L2 cache. However i would still recommend an opteron with one that fits your budget over any normal Venice or SanDiego Athlon 64. Rumour has it these will be taken away from the retail channel so you will not be able to purchase them anymore, so get them whilst you can because they are comparable in price aswell ;)

Thanks for that info, as stated I realized it was a stupid question haha...but that extra information you gave was very helpful.

I think however that I am on a budget and think that the venice will probably suit my cost better.

no problem, but i would highly recommend the opteron 144 as they cost the same ish, and it is a better performer. Also with the 144 if you are interested in OCing later on down the road, you will find that it will perform or OC quite well.
