How would an Opteron 140 + Radeon 9800 Pro + 2x 512Mb of Crucial memory PC2700 + 120GB WD SE compare with a similar config, but with P4 2.8C? Thanks.

Looks pretty close.
I found the AMDZone benchmarks to be selected to favor the AMD CPU, imagine that :p If you want to see a blend of benchmarks that provides a better idea of the respective capabilities of each processor have a look here it shows just how effective the HT on the P4 can be at improving performance especially once you start multitasking.

I was going to infer that, but didn't want to start another of these flame wars that have been going on....:D

The amdzone review was a sad display of a review biased in so many ways and so advantageous to drop all the multimedia tests that show it very much in the p4 favor. Xbitlabs had a good review awhile back on this.

Likw was mentioned above the 144 is likely not to far back of the 3.2ghz p4c so I think the 140 maybe quite cmoparable to a 2.8c or slightly behind it.

Like mentioned above the factors of HT and the fact the cost difference may be in the intel favor I would go with the intel chip unless you have to have 64bit support. Too new aof a product for me with lack of proven mobo and bios support to jump on it yet.

Anyone else find it weird that they tested in a widescreen resolution?

*EDIT* Not saying it's not accurate because of that... just saying... weird.

I don't have to have 64bit processor. Just thought I'd get a head start on upgrades since my friend wants to buy my dell 4600 w/P4 2.6GHz processor.

I'm not big on OC'ing. I just want a fast, stable and quiet system. Latest & greatest at a reasonable price combination is a plus :)

So far, all I have for my new PC is a Lian-Li PC60 case, Zalman 7000CU (That limits me to certain processors and mainboards) and a Zalman 400W PSU. I'm not sure what I want to do and that's why I came to this board for suggestions. Thanks all.

When the Athlon-64 launches it won't be cheap... new technology and new models are never cheap... that's just the way it is. I'll stick with my current setup for a while until there's an Athlon-64 solution that's just as fast or faster than my current one for less than $200. That'll also leave time to let MS get their 64 bit version of Windows XP out the door, get the bugs worked out, and get more 64 bit applications on shelves.

Jeff has a great strategy for buying setups and staying in the game of upgrading....
