Opteron 140 vs P4 2.8ghz w/ HT

I'm looking at 2 different server platforms for running gameservers on. The Opteron 140 (1.4ghz) and the 2.8ghz P4 with HyperThreading.

Does anyone know of any good tests done on these 2 platforms, or have any opinions on which would be better?

I need stability and ability to multi-task well, over raw CPU power.

Cost is not an issue.

Platform will be Linux.

if cost is not an issue, why look at the opteron 140? Thats the slowest of the bunch, and your comparing a server chip to a desktop chip.

My suggestion is look at Athlon 64 / Pentium 4 or Opteron / Xeon.

well if you are multitasking heavily i would go with the P4 just cause it has HT
but if you got two of the opterons and a dual proc board it would blow the P4 away

True, EXCEPT the Opteron 100 series are all single proc. chips. He'd have to get one of the 200 series to be able to use dual processors.

Opteron 142 and others roundup

I dont know if these are the benchmarks you are looking for but 142 @1.6 is the closest thing i've found and I believe 140 is only 1.4. Based on these benches, 2.8HT is significantly faster, on top of the fact 2.8 can easily be taken to 3.5 which will absolutely blow the opteron unless its a 2.0ghz opteron. Opteron is basically an fX processor so unless you have it at around 2.0ghz it's not really a competitor. I am not sure about server applications....but for everything else. If price is not an issue might as well get Athlon 64 3400+ nventiv II and take it to 2.8ghz and some raptor hard drives for your server. That'd be one heck of an overclocked server.

Server operations are server operations, I doubt a game server would stress the proc anywhere near as much as a convoluted DB design, which the Opteron rocks ass at. Likely your Opteron system will perform overall slightly better than the P42.8. What games are you going to be running on it?

Whoa, just read the Linux + cost not an issue part. It really depends on your needs, but if you need a super fast server to run multiple gameservers (as it sounds) then definitely consider the Opteron then, but look into the 24x models as others have mentioned, you wanna be able to DP that baby. Personally, I would set about creating my own custom linux all compiled 64-bit, and just run the server in 64-bit mode, you get the advantage of the extra registers which should give you a huge performance boost. I have a fair bit of experience slapping together my own distros though, so an alternative may be to look into the 64 bit version of SuSE. Each gameserver won't get to make use of the extra registers unless you can convince them to recompile the server binary on Linux specifically for an Opteron, but it will help the OS and anything else you actually can recompile out.
