My question is why aren't these chips mainstream. Are these chips faster then the brand new 2600K

Why doesnt AMD make a 8 core desktop entusiast

Why doesn't Intel make 8 core desktop enthusiast.

They have the technology with Xeon and Opteron

Yet cant incoroporate it into a 2600K 8 core or Phenom lastet 8 core.

Why arent people buying this Operton or Xeon 8 core ?

Name 5 desktop/consumer mainstream applications that would use 8-cores (or 12) and that deliver the kind of performance gains over quad-core CPU's that consumers would be willing to pay >$500 to own.

Why not ask why 12 cylinder engines aren't mainstream? Or flying cars. Or stealth technology. Or submarines. Oooh, I always wanted submarines to become mainstream. I'd still want it to be low in power-consumption of course, and have a good idle-state profile.

As Idontcare said, it's just not viable for mainstream release. It will be too expensive and yield little gain.

There are plenty of people with too much money who buy XTREEEEEEME processors who would surely buy 8 core cpu's....

I tried a dual 4 core w/ht setup, but they ran at 2.26 each and no overclocking. The SB at 4.4 is just as fast as that !

Why the hell do you ask the same questions is Every God Damned thread?

He likes the God Damned attention, that's why.
He's been told many times that it isn't necessary or viable for consumer level, but I guess he wants a different answer...

That's three threads on exactly the same topic...

As much as I hate to put words in peoples mouths... I have a feeling a not to different answer may be in store in the future. Three letter word begins with B (due to the tone (which may be misconstrued on my part) of the replies).

The 12 core Opterons have a massive die size, and they run at lower frequencies (~2.2ghz). They make sense for servers where parallelism is important, but once you run a single threaded app on one, you'll be upset and you'll want your quad core back. D:

AMD's Single threading performance barely matches the old Intel Q8x0 series, thanks to Turbo it was helped somewhat.

Have u seen an 8 core beckton b4?

lets say the chips each went for around 2g retail... with a 4 socket board u needed for them.

now unless ur name is aigomorla, i dont see anyone on this forum outside companies with that much processor greed.
