From what I hear, extension tubes are the best way to go if you don't have a true macro lens.

I wouldn't waste money on it. It's basically a glorified magnifying glass. Extension tubes are the way to go on the cheap (respectively). Pro Optic or Kenko.

i've used close up filters with respectable results

even the really amazing macro shooters use them sometimes (in addition to their macro lenses)

optically, they're not great...but most of the affected quality is around the outside

i have the tiffen set, they stack...but IQ really sucks when they're stacked
i just use the +4 one

a lot of people swear by the canon 250d (i think thats the canon close up filter)

I've actually had some really good results with my current close-ups. I kind of like the distortion around the outer perimeter of the photo - adds a neat fish-eye effect almost. An extension tube is on my list but I shoot on a graduate student budget :(.
