opt to NOT use fanmate2 on Zalman 7000-alcu

I am planning on using the Zalman CNPS7000-AlCu on my Intel 865PERL mb.
I see from the Zalman site that the fanmate2 controller goes inline between the fan and the motherboarb cpu fan vreg plug. Can you hook the fan up to the mb directly and have it control the fan speed? Or do you have to use the fanmate controller?

You can use the CNPS7000 with or without the fanmate.

I'm also about to put a 7000 AlCu on a D865Perl, how has it worked for you w/o the fan mate?
