I find it hard to believe that it takes "72 hours" to take you out of a computerized spam program. Isn't this BS, or is there a legitimate reason for the delay?

I'm suspicious that they just want more time to send more spam or sell your addy to someone else....

Don't ever send an email back to a spammer requesting to be removed from their mailing list. It will only ensure that you will recieve more and more spam.

Most of the time, that link just confirms that the e-mail address they are sending to is real, so they keep sending the spam and then they can sell it as a confirmed e-mail address.

I just now had an email that popped up the 'read receipt requested' window for OE. It was a piece of spam. I certainly picked 'no' to not send a read receipt back.

not always true. some opt-outs are actually for that reason. and they say 72 hours because some companies already have address lists put together and may be sending out another email the next night and you might be on that list.

A lot of the spam email does have BS opt outs, but some are legit. Trust me.

I'm sure that some are legit, but how do you tell which are and which aren't?

that is the hard part and no, i don't know the answer to that. I would say that most of the ones that have a legitimate reply to address are the the ones i trust.

I think that you are lucky! I've tried opt-outs, and I am still pulling down about 15-20 pieces of spam every day. If I start opt-outs, I get even more.

What idiot-spammer would turn on read receipts! HAHAHAHA Can you imagine if he sent out 1,000,000 emails and received 1,000,000 read receipts! (Of course I highly doubt that he was using a real email address....) But I guess he could have been collecting them to count for confirmed... :|

I agree that there are some that are legitimate. Usually those are generated by legitimate buisnesses. I was on ACT!'s list for a while and I unsubscribed with no issue. But the best thing you can do with spam mail is just delete it.

i would agree with that. but some people just can't do that and have to have a cow pissing and moaning about it.

I had been getting about 40-50 a day then I started opting out on everyone I could since the amount of mail I was get was steadily going up. Since then it had dropped down to 3-4, but now it is back on the rise about 15, but I haven't been opting out lately. So the theory "it doesn't work", doesn't hold water. Just my personal experience, as always, YMMV.
