First, a point of correction. GM didn't pay $7 million for the cars. That's how much they are worth. Their cost is probably under $5 million (might be well under that, but it's anyone's guess how much they cost to manufacture).

Second, NOBODY lost out in this promo.
1)Oprah boosted her ratings and got TONS of free publicity for her show (not only in her target demographic, either), for FREE.
2)GM bought an unprecedented amount of advertisement time on the biggest talk show on TV. Oprah spent the entire episode on the giveaway, touring the cars in the parking lot, going to the plant, etc. Believe me, Oprah pimped the Pontiac G6 unlike any commercial.
3)Instead of doing a simple giveaway, GM gave their cars to people who NEEDED them, thus improving their customer relations.

I'm not so sure about that, did you see the people that got the cars? I don't want them on the freeway, it's too crowded already. 🙂

Yeah, she didn't pay a dime for them but she sure put in a lot of effort to make it happen. There is a reason why Ophrah's show is still on the air and why she makes 9 figures a year. (src)
