oppinions needed for new system

The time has come for a new pc, and I have a system just about picked out. backround info: pc is used for very light gaming, internet browsing, some decent computing programs for school (matlab, autocad, photoshop, etc), basically a fast all around pc, but not focused on gaming.

what i have so far:
western digital 74gb raptor sata

what I plan on ordering:
mobo - gigabyte ga-k8n pro-sli socket 939 = $115
proc - amd athlon 64 3200+ (venice) = $173
ram - looking at corsair xms ddr400 512mb x2 dual channel w/plat heat spreader = $99
vid card - not sure yet, but doesnt have to be top end at all
power supply - not sure yet, but should be 24 pin...currently have a no name 20 pin 🙁

all prices I listed are shipped price from zipzoomfly.com, they seem to beat newegg most of the time, and have 2nd day shipping vs ups 3 day.

I wouldn't mind having an OC'able setup, so i'm not sure if there are any weak links in my setup. as i've heard that processor can be oc'ed to a 3800+ reliably. I already have a case and drives, just need the main components. I have quite a bit more to research but I would like to spend as little as possible on this, but still get a decent pc.

Mainly, i'm not sure if the ram i picked out is good, so any suggestions would be much appreciated.

EDIT: messed up on ram description

pretty much, just a little piece of mind i guess 🙂

completely understandable

as for PSU, i'd say stick with enermax, fortron, antec (although i have seen some problems reported)....

The Raptor isn't really worth the price premium; I would skip that unless you're dealing with unlimited funds.

For the PSU I would do with a 380 watt Seasonic. I assume you are re-using an older case?

yea i bought an aspire turbo case from newegg a few months back, it's served me well so far and keeping with the budget i'll just use it. unfortunatly for the raptor, its the only thing i have bought so far :-/

but as far as the system specs, are they good? should i change anything?

XMS isn't worth it. Go with Crucial or Corsair value.

but its only 99 bucks... or thats a price mistake?

the egg has it for 180 link

probably 199 with the 1 dropped or $99 per gig

i'd drop down to g.skill or corsair value.

psu: fortron 400w ($40)
mobo: epox 9npa+ in your budget or DFI
depending on your budget: 6800gs for $190 or 7800gt for $300 (both eVGA)
are you interested in spending an extra $60 (plus your saved $40 from the ram?) if so, get the x2 3800. i think it'll help future proof the system

if it's out of your budget though, no sweat

my mistake, the price is $99 but I meant 2x512, not 2x1024...

I looked at the x2 3800 but it was $295, both on the egg and zipzoom, so if i budgeted a bit I could swing that if it would be worth it.

I just know that corsair is usually pretty overclockable, so if i'm going with the 3200+ and want to bring it up to a 3800 I figured I'd get the xms, but if i'm going with a better processor that doens't need overclocked, then value ram would be better. Did I get that right? is the gigabyte mobo i picked out garbage for the price?

Thanks for all the help guys, i've been out of the loop for too long I guess 🙂

Well you can use dividers for overclocking, so it doesn't hurt to just use value ram. A64's aren't bandwidth hungry, so you don't really take a performance hit by running the ram with a divider, so it's an easy way to save some money without losing performance. As for the PSU, I would recomend a 400w Fortron.
