Should I get a PNY 5900SE with CoD for $219 locally or eVGA 5900SE for $188?

Thanks for the input,

It depends on whether you like COD or not. If you do, shop around for the cheapest price you can find. If the lowest price + eVGA is higher than the PNY, get the PNY.

Another thing to consider are the warranties on the cards.

Another thing to factor in is sales tax on the local sale (if applicable in your state). If the eVGA card can be had for $188 shipped to your door and you have to pay sales tax on the PNY card, then I'd be leaning toward the eVGA card.

COD for ~$31 ($219-188) is a pretty hot deal, though. GoGamer currently has it for $35 + shipping, but you might be able to pick it up off the FS/FT forum here for around $25 shipped.

PNY sucks as a manufacturer. If you are willing to pay 220, then you should get a 9800 Pro - they kick ass and beat the 5900 SE by a good margin. CoD you can buy later because looks like PNY is ripping you off anyway. They aren't offering you a deal and the card isn't worth that much.

ive never had problems with PNY. the 5900SE can be overclocked to insane levels. and as our good friend VIAN pointed out earlier "if you overclock, then Nvidia is the compnay for you" however, if you are just getting it for COD, i suggest just buying the 9800pro instead. NEVER buy a video card for a game. its not worth it.

PNY's lifetime warranty is BS. They should change it to Electronic Lifetime Warranty. And I have bought memory from them that just broke out of nowhere. They also charge a lot. Not worth it, I think there are better companies that you could spend your money on. Nvidia: BFG Tech, EVGA. ATI: Sapphire; don't know too many others.

Once again VIAN, you are missing the topic entirely, it's like a kid showing up for a book review class, not having read the book....... In response to ctbook's original question. I would go with the PNY, I can tell you from experience, having owned 4 PNY cards over the past 3 years, they make EXCELLENT cards, I have never had any trouble with them, and if you take a gander around, you will notice that some people have complained about blurry text with their evga 5900se's and that they use poor quality 2d components. Not saying that evga is bad, just saying if I was given the same choice you are given, I would go with the PNY.

Had a PNY GF4MX420. Nice card but fan died. They warrantied it and no probs since. Also had a Ti4600 from PNY. Super nice card. I heard similiar things about the eVGA 5900SE with poor 2D though. I heard the are, or can be, displaying somewhat blurry test and the contrast/brightness levels cant compensate for it.

PNY doesn't manufacture cards Vian. They put their name on MSI cards. My PNY Ti4400 was as good as any other reference design Ti4400 back in the days of 4400s.

Anyway- do NOT buy an SE card for these prices. Leave CoD out of the mix. Buy a 9800Pro if you can get in on a $200 AMIR if you can, get a real 5900 for $200 if you can't.

Friends don't let friends buy SEs or MXs.

FX se has no comparison to a mx nomenclature. The se is a very good quality card. Research about something before blanket stating.

evga is better.

you should go for radeon 9800pro 128mb sapphire for 215$ or for BBA for 199$.

If you don't want CoD, consider a $214 shipped OEM 9800 Pro @ NewEgg. It'll be faster than the 5900SE in every way, especially in future DX9 games.

If you want CoD and that PNY price is before tax, consider a $214 OEM 9800P + $30 OEM CoD = $234 shipped @ NewEgg instead. (OEM means NewEgg warranties the product, not the manufacturer. That means one year for the 9800P. I'm not sure about CoD, but it's two CD's--make a backup copy to CD-R's or your HD and you'll be set.) You end up with a faster, more future-proof card and the same game for about the same price. The only con is a lesser warranty, but I don't think the card will fail unless you OC it (and maybe then only if you OC it severely).

If you want CoD and an nVidia card, then I think these are your two best options:

1. If both prices are total (including shipping &/ tax), go with the PNY,
2. If the PNY price is tax addtl., then I'd go with this MSI 5900XT and that OEM CoD. You get VIVO and extra games and a known quiet, one-slot cooler.

BBA = Built By ATi. Sapphire builds ATi's cards, so that's why so many ppl recommend them (same card with lesser warranty for usually much less).

What research is necessary Bucksnort? I don't need to read anything to know I like 700MHz memory far less than 800MHz-950MHz memory? I also like the SEs 400MHz core speed less than the Ultra and 5950s 450 and 475MHz core.

Maybe you're the one that should do some research before inappropriately "correcting" others who apparently know more about it than you?

I'll stand by my original statement: You'd have to be nuts to buy an SE for those prices.

And buying FX5900 ultra and 5950 at much higher prices isn't? SE might have slower rated memory but it also runs at tighter timings. Real world differences isn't all that great.
