Ok here's the deal:

I work in a for a mid-size global company. I started with the company a little over 3 years ago, about a month after our department launched.

We found out a few weeks ago that the department here is closing soon and they are opening a new one in another city. They asked us each individually if we would consider re-locating. After discussing it with my wife, we both agreed that if the pay was adequate (most likely a significant raise) that we'd move.

Well, since then things have been really quiet. The new positions have yet to be posted, though they had us fill out internal applications. There are only a couple of months until the department closes, and we have zero details about the "new positions". HR won't reply to my emails or phone calls. They are notorious for dragging their feet until the last minute. So there are a few possible scenarios:

a) They plan on hiring outside the company (relocation is a smokescreen so we won't get upset.)

b) They haven't laid out the details of the new positions so they have no new information.

c) The positions are available, but our HR dept is slacking.

So I'm left with a couple of options. Should I hold out for more info, knowing it will come eventually? Or do I start looking immediately for a new position elsewhere?

Has anybody experienced this in their workplace? What should I expect in the coming months?

I am visiting a friend a few hours away from here next week. His brother is the IT manager for a local company in his area. He has already offered me a position, but the details are sketchy. Which is why I'm heading down there. Also, the NHL playoffs are starting (we're all big hockey fans).

Anyway, this is a new experience for me so I'd like some input.

Definitely start looking elsewhere just in case. Be as faithful to your company as they are to you... no more.

You need to have options.
You should look to see what is available, who knows, you might find a better position and a better salary elsewhere but you won't know if you don't look. And now you really should look in case there is no future for you in your present company.

Good luck either way.

Never trust big business because they will do what is best for them not you. Start looking into other positions as other posters have said as well. Look out for number one since nobody else will.
