Opinions/Thoughts Wanted

I'm building a dream rig. I'm so freggin' tired of my Dell I'm practically giving it away to my parents who needed a new computer anyways.

My Rig

Any opinions, thoughts, etc. are wanted. I'm a bit unsure about the graphics card. btw, ATI is OUT OF THE QUESTION. Their drivers for Linux *suck,* and (yes, you guessed it!), I run Linux. :) So please, don't recommend me an ATI card, because I am not going down that road.

Also, there are two cases listed because I'm still "shopping" for a great case (see me other thread regarding this topic :)).

Should I just ditch this whole idea and go with an AMD64?

:D Thanks in advance!

Linky no work

Although, I definately suggest A64 right now. With excellent gaming, solid price/performance, decent overclocking (with new chipsets), and the 64 bit support (you can run 64bit Linux right now!!). It's hard to not recommend it.

This is something that ya probably should be looking at for a dream rig (and this will actually be mine in 3 weeks):

A64 3200+ (3400 if you must)
Asus or abit NF3 250 MB (soon to be released. Going with a Kt800 pro wouldn't be a bad plan either)
1GB of whatever ram you can afford
Ati X800XT (available in 2 weeks)
etc etc etc

Good DVD Burner, I have one. However, I would go with the Athlon 64. Performance is better, and you support the underdog. I would personally wait a bit for the new components to be released. Prices will drop on the "older, yet only slightly worse" components.

First off, you need to fix your link to point to here: https://secure.newegg.com/app/WishR.asp?ID=741801. I too would recommend an AMD64 processor and motherboard because they really are great performers and the price should be about the same, maybe even lower. I would actually look at the Nu-tech burner that recently did so well in the anandtech DVD roundup, should be a bit better than the Lite-On, comes in black, and costs about the same. If you can afford it, go with the Lian Li case. They are just so much less common than that Antec model and would certainly be nice for Lan parties due to it's size and weight. I didn't see an aftermarket HSF so I assume you will not be overclocking? If that is the case, consider going with some quieter case fans because I have always found those YS-tech ones to be quite loud. If you decide to go AMD64 you will want to see if either the VIA or Nvidia boards have linux drivers yet.

Aug, I believe Nvidia has 64 bit Linux and Windows drivers for all of their hardware, VIA has 64 bit Windows drivers too (but none for Linux that I could find on their driver site). Of course the 64-bit Windows drivers are kinda useless with only a beta version of 64 bit Windows.

I love the Antec case.
Like the A64 also.
The fans are pretty noisy - I use 5 panaflos and enjoy the quiet.

Go with this rather than the 2 separate sticks, these are matched, run better timings and are actually a bit cheaper.

Also, go with the Antec Sonata Case and skip the fans, it will be quieter and look a bit better:D Replace the PS if you would like to:D

Oh, and remove the Http:// from the link, leave the Https://

I'd go with:

* The Lian Li Case or another, much more exotic and black looks better, IMO

* An Asus P4P800 deluxe mobo instead of that Gigabyte, saving $70 and getting the same performance & features

* Put that $70 saved toward a Plextor 12X DVD+-R, you wont regret it

* A Hitachi 7K250 SATA drive instead of that Seagate 160

* Err, yes, I'd probably consider getting an A64 instead of that 3.2

So I take it that the AMD is the general consensus. I have to admit I'm kind of scared to make the move. It's just something a bit "different" from what I'm used to (not AMD vs Intel; instead, 64bit versus 32bit processor).

:)

I've not looking much into AMD boards, so I guess this will mean I will be going into uncharted territory! :)

Thanks for everyone who posted. (link has been fixed) Any other thoughts/opinions would be greatly appreciated!

i would personally step down that processor to a 2.8 Ghz p4 with 800 FSB/HT, as those are about $100 cheaper for marginally less performance.

If you want to stay with Intel, thats a good plan. But AMD is better, come on support the undergod...er underdog :).
