OK...

If you had the opportunity and $$$ to start your own website and you wanted it to

A)Make Money (at least enough to sustain itself and you a little bit)
B)Do some good in the world

What would it be? I feel like I have a lot of options but want to take the pulse of the public, so to speak.

I am not going to make a living shooting CD covers for obscure Christian recording artists, now am I?

I ask this because I am here so that I can work from home as much as possible and avoid having to put my kids in after school care.

If your ideas fly, I'll give you a cut! :)

'kay.

This is the first really serious question that I have asked. Am I being punished, or am I just asking too much here?

Okay, Paulson. I was starting to get paranoid!

Maybe I'll ask the question again next week.

Have a good weekend!

It's pretty hard to perform services online without having any contacts (like vendors, distributors, or actual people that are wanting to sell a service but don't know how). Basicaly whatever you may want to help with will involve one of these. Any services that I can think of off the top of my head would be something like translations (from what I have read from you, if I remember correctly you might speak spanish - you could try doing some translations online...), helping kids with homework... Sorry, I guess friday night is not the best for thinking of anything more profitable... If I think of something eventually, I'll post.
Good luck!!!

To make serious coin ya gotta get hits. To get hits you gotta have something that nobody (or few) others have. And to keep it going, you better like the subject... A LOT!

Once you are getting the "hits", you can sell ad space. You might be able be able to sell items or a service and make money that way. You still need a lot of traffic to pull that off.

My sister-in-law downloads Real Audio files and transcribes them from a couple different sources. That has nothing to do with having a web page, but I'll get the addresses for you if you're interested.

And there is always the porn angle. I wouldn't judge anybody that makes money from that. And there are a LOT of folks doing it too. I'm not sure how you go about it, but there must be a wealth of info on that subject. You'll probably want to do a trial run by uploading a few pages and pics to Off Topic first, so we can help tweak your technique before you go public ;)

Oh, and the making money part, there are all the banner adds that will take care of some of that.
Oops - got scooped on that one...

Bless you both. I've thought about the porn angle, and I could carry it off, but my conscience wouldn't let me. :) I've got a few good years left on the old bod, but I also have young children. Just call me Jenna (Survivor). It's tempting, but I know my limits. I'll be picking your brains later, of that you can be sure. :)

Do you have experience in anything in particular or something you usually like to do as a hobby (appart from taking care of your kids!). That might help to think up of something...

I've been working towards my MA in counseling. I can write ANYTHING, from technical writing to poetry.

I worked for years as a veterinary technician.

I haven't ever tried to join MENSA, but my Stanford Benet when I was a kid was 157+/-3. I have potential.

I'm cute. :) being charismatic and attractive doesn't hurt, I suppose. :)

Well, I know what I eventually want to do with my web site that will eventually make me money that fits your criteria.

But what do you like to do? What talents do you have? What are your interests?

A close friend of mine is webmaster (and part owner) for a porn site, personal security site, and others that he makes good money from by specializing in getting good site traffic.

If you like to work from home and would have done well in direct mail advertising for something you know or do, you can excel in Internet sales.

EDIT: You don't need much startup $$$ to make a good and successful website. Learn HTML and/or get a good web page builder (many are free).

What about creating some type of counseling online? (if this sounds ridiculous just shoot me, but I was just thinking 'aloud'). This could just be an idea to work on...
