Ive been away from gaming on my computer for about 1 1/2 years so my current computer is out of date. Not much is worth saving from it so I want to build my first computer. Im NOT looking for the fastest comp ever made, and not interested in OCing at this point. Target price around 500 or less =) but can go over. interested in games like Tribes Vengeance and Doom 3 etc....FPS

Based on other threads of this nature Im looking at :

chaintech VNF3-250 ------ $72 @newegg
athlon 64 3000+ ------ $164
Total -----$236

video cards:
Most have recommended geforce 6800 (chaintech) $269 or radeon 9800 pro. Would like to cut cost here some. what cards are cheaper but still handle dx9? In a few months I can always upgrade this anyway. just want a cheaper card to get started with.
found on hot deals: Radeon 9550 for $100

Ram:
suggestions?
saw a recommendation for PQI turbo 512x 2 DDR 3200 for $171
really have no clue about differences between quality.
would like 1gig

Case:
smaller the better.

The 9800pro will barely play Doom3. I would get the 6800 or 6800GT or Radeon X800pro. The rest of the system looks OK, but I would make sure the 3000+ is the newcastle core.

I would suggest this ram. From my experience, you can get 2 diff sets of stock timings: 2.5-3-3-8 or 2.5-3-3-6. If you get the 2.5-3-3-8 I am very positive you can manually set to 2.5-3-3-6 with no problems. I did this and ran memtest86 overnight and produced no errors. Granted there are many other factors, this is just an inclination towards it working.

You may also get the 2.5-3-3-6 timings which are good. I think you might be able to manually set these to 2-3-3-6. I was able to do it to one stick but not the other (I didn't get dual matching sticks). Basically all this boils down to this memory being good and it is cheaper than the PQI ones you wanted. Btw, Corsair is a great memory brand.

All good picks....an A64 3000+ \ CTech VNF-250\ 512mb PQI PC3200
add the 6800 for vid duties and you'll have an great gaming rig in your price range...
