Normally am wouldn't ask this of you folks, but I respect you opinions, so any suggestions/comments will be appreciated
Purpose: 80% Programming / Photo Editing / Desktop Publishing & 20% Gaming - Homeworld 2, Rise of Nations, UT 2004, NFS Underground for example

System planning to build :

  • Asus P4C800-E Deluxe Motherboard
    Intel P4 2.80E Ghz 1MB L2 Cache CPU
    2 x 512MB PC3200 DDR - Brand not certain yet
    HIS 9600 XT/TD 128 MB Video Card
    LG DVD/CDRW 4040B - Already Have
Western Digital Caviar 80GB UDMA IDE Hard Drive - Already Have this one - Backup Drive/Applications
WD 80GB IDE or SATA Hard Drive - Considering for Main Drive (or swap from above choice)
    Samsung 193P LCD Monitor
Creative I-Trigue 2.1 Speakers - Already have a kick butt home theatre, so 5.1 on system no needed.

This is my plan, so far, except for the CASE and PWS - But that will be a last minute choice.

I am going from a P3 933 with 768 MB Ram and Asus CuV4X Motherboard with some of the above (noted) and a GF4 - Ti4200 128MB Video card with a Samsung 950P CRT Monitor. So kind of a jump here, but I need to know if I have missed anything?

Thanks in advance

Nice-looking system. My only recommendation is to def. get an SATA hard drive. HGST Deskstar or Seagate Barracudas should do a fine job. Maybe 120GB instead? For the former, the price difference is about $33 at Newegg. I say SATA because I assume you won't be interested in making upgrades anytime soon. Other than that, Corsair or Kingston for memory and... you're good to roll! 😎

And of course, your last minute option of a case/ps. 😉 Lian-Li/Enermax perhaps? 🙂

Ok, just to confirm things. 2.80C is over-clockable right ? Or at least better to OC than the 2.8E ?

And my next question would be about the SATA Drive. Recommend it as a Backup or Main Drive? I do not plan to do a RAID array of any sort at this time. For my use, I see no purpose in it.

Thanks again!

the 2.8C OCs just fine. i had mine up to 3.5ghz but choose to go with 3.3 ghz on stock voltage. i dont know if the precotts OC better but it doesnt matter, they are waaaaay to hot and most people need water or phase change to aggressively OC them

as for the SATA drives, they offer very little performance gain (if any) over standard IDE harddrives

Hmm, ok. Well wouldnt the 1MB L2 Cache give a pretty decent performance boost to match any slight over clocking I would get with the 2.80C Chip?

As I also understand it, don't SATA drives run loader and hotter than IDE? Reminds me of SCSI?!

Nope.

I don't think so. I've witnessed a few WD 7200RPM SATA's and they're just as quiet as any IDE. Definitely not as loud as any SCSI drives I've used (can you say "LVD160 10K RPM Cheetah Turbine of Doom"?!?!)

I'm personally going to check out a few of the new Raptor 10K RPM SATA's on my next build since they're talking ~5ms seek times!! Woot!

An aside: I built an audio production rig for a producer friend of mine and used all Maxtor 7200 RPM FMB drives. The quietest, coolest drives I've ever used...
