I'm facing a dilema. I have to choose between Miami-Dade Honors Program or Purdue University. Purdue is expensive as hell and MDCC is free. I can go to Purdue and master in Aerospace engineering there or I can take basic courses in MDCC and in 2 yrs transfer to Georgia Tech (higher rank than Purdue). I'll be staying home since I live in Miami. Anyone doing this or did this? please help.....advice....I need good advice. This decision could make me or break me. Thanks.

I would say go with Purdue University. Of course I have reasoning to that since I am a junior there. Since you are interested in Aerospace Engineering you should research how many astronauts graduated from Purdue. (Neil Armstrong being one of them.) I dont know how many of your transfer credits Georgia Tech would accept, but you may want to look into that.

I started off at a community college, because it was free, then transfered to the University of Buffalo after a couple (well, ok 3) years. It didnt really work out so well for me. Maybe it was the fact that my teachers couldn't speak english. It also could have been that I couldnt deal with 300 people in a class room. Though, it could have been because I wasn't prepared for it because I had it so easy in CC.

On the other hand, it does give you a chance to ease into college life and it is MUCH cheaper (that was the biggest factor for me). If you do decide to go to community college, take the most difficult classes they have to offer and get a 4.0 GPA so you don't have to switch from not working at all to having to work your ass off 2 years from now.

I would recommend going to Purdue and staying in a dorm. Why? Well I did the community college thing for two years and stayed at home with my parents, then transferred to a bigger university. But one of the biggest regrets in my life so far have been that I missed out on the college life. I didn't get to stay in a dorm the size of my closet, drink and party until 4 in the morning with friends, and have the chance to make new friends. I stayed in an apartment when I got to school, worked 30-40 hours a week to pay for everything and ended up graduating with a degree but with a significant portion of the "college experience" missing.
Don't worry so much about getting a job after school, but rather, enjoy life as it comes to you. Don't take everything so seriously, get out make new friends, do something new and different, get wasted, have fun. You have the rest of your life to be serious.

wait..I forgot........MDCC has a transfer program with Georgia Tech. I can do my first 2 yrs at MDCC and transfer to Gergia Tech if I maintain a 3.2GPA or better. All credits transfer right over.

If that's the case, the curriculum is probably matched up better. I'd say go with the CC. Yeah, you'll miss out some college life, but you're going to save a ton of money and, since you'll have nothing else to do, you'll be more inclined to get into the habit of studying.

I'm at Purdue right now, and am currently taking some freshman engineering classes. Its seems to be a good solid program from what I've seen so far.

Also, don't pay attention to those rankings. Most of it comes from BS about alumni giving back to the school.

When did Miami-Dade CC become free? Unless the honors program is equivalent to a scholarship?

The tutition costs at a community college are lower per credit hour.

Check with Purdue on what credits could be transferable.

Both are good engineering schools.

Purdue, its hard to convince me that a community college is as good or rigorous as a 4 year university.

Of course if you're really that hard up for money, well its hard to say...

Honestly.... man, friend to friend.

Do you want to stay here because of the "girl", or because you are really looking forward to MDCC?

Well, if you are going to a CC, then Miami-Dade is one of the best in the country. If you can't afford Purdue then going to Miami-Dade for a year or two is not too bad. Purdue Engineering is not too hard, so you won't miss out much. Also, why don't you consider Florida or Florida State or other state schools?

Just study hard to make sure you can transfer. Also, don't be too surprised if when you first transfer the courses overwhelm you. Happens a lot of time because of the climate change, which is one advantage of staying at one school for all 4 years.

I went to Miami-Dade like 10 years ago, it was not that bad, about 1/2 mile from my house (Kendall campus). They have a lot of transfer programs.
If you can go for free, do it, unless your parents have the bucks, or you have the grades to ride Purdue, go for Purdue.
Only thing better about Miami-dade, is you can skip class and go to South Beach :) or the Grove :p
