Fry's is touting this as a "5-pc. Gaming Speaker System" and has it on sale for $59. I'm not really a gamer; my current speakers are a set of Yamaha YST-M10's. Old but servicable.

I do play a fair amount of CD's and MP3's on my system and I'm wondering if it's worth the upgrade. Will I hear a noticable improvement in the Altec Lansings vs. my Yamaha's?

I'm just a bit confuzzled here - do you mean the Altec Lansing ACS-54 speakers? I'd be very surprised to hear Labtec was naming their speakers ACS-anything. ;)

The ACS 54's are nice quality speakers, good highs, bit mushy lows. A *huge* improvement over your old speakers, though. :) $59 is not so great a deal, but go ahead and test them in-store and see if they're your thing. Here's some links as well:

I bought the big brothers to the ACS54s, the ACS56s, myself. Great set. :)

0sully: I stand corrected. You're right, the speakers are by Altec Lansing. Thanks for the input and the links. I'll check them out and I'll also check PriceWatch.

I forget to mention in my original post that I have a SoundBlaster Live! Value for a soundcard.

Any other opinions/recommendations out there?

I got 54s about two years ago from ValueAmerica for $40. They haven't let me down to this day. My only upgrade *may* be to Klipsch.

I would use the 56s if you have digital-out from the sound card.

I have the ACS-56 set and am thoroughly impressed. Lucky for me Best Buy mismarked them last Christmas for $79.99! They are trying to sell the 54's for the same price now. I've heard the 54's and they will be one heck of an improvement over your current set up. I think you'll like them...

Thanks for the follow-up. My current speakers are the last hold-over from my 133MHz days. Guess I've figured out what my next upgrade will be. ;)
