Opinions on upgrade/overhaul....

You can see the system I have now in my sig below, and I've been running WinXp Home....For the past 2 weeks I've had nothing but problems with XP, so I thought what the hell why not upgrade the Mobo, Processor, HD, and Memory. I think I might go to Win2000.
Anyway, its been awhile since I've kept up with all the new technolgy, I've been reading all kinds of articles this week. So my question is, if I want to get a P4 1.8Ghz, do I want the socket 478? And I've always had an Asus mobo, which one would be best for me? I've heard alot of people liking the 850chipset with RDRam, would that be the way to go? And last, my DVD and Burner, and sound card should work with the new mobo right?

Yeah...My take on XP home is that it really leaves a lot to be desired. I do like XP Pro though. You can get a full version XP Pro OEM copy from your local mom & pop computer store for about $170.
I would stay away from any mobo that requires Rambus Ram. It's dying on the vine. Intel is succumbing to the market pressure and coming out with their DDR ram mobo's that run the P4.
I have had nothing but good luck running the AMD Athlon line of CPU's with DDR ram for the last year. (I'm a reseller)
Prior to 1 yr. ago I was a diehard Intel fan. Not anymore. In my humble opinion they have really dropped the ball.
I really like the Asus A7A 266 mobo with the Amd Xp cpu's. They are finnicky with what brand of memory you can use though. That's the only negative thing I can say about the mobo. I am looking into the Asus dual AMD cpu mobo right now. I haven't got my hands on one yet, give it a couple of weeks. I tried the Tyan dual AMD cpu mobo, but it had too many bugs.

My own personal 'overhaul' started this week with the purchase of a SiS735 motherboard, Duron 900 (until XP's come down in price at least, I will OC it to 266 FSB), ASII, and will continue with (eventually) 384MB's of PC2100, 350W Enermax PSU and I'll stick with my Radeon 32MB DDR, and SB Live! Platinum. So I guess that is what I would recommend (you'd probably want an Athlon XP instead of the Duron though), but I'm not a huge power user (as you can see with the cpu).

IMO your HD, DVD, CD-RW, and case are all fine. What is your video card, and what do you use your computer for BTW?
 
If your set on Intel, than I'd probably go with a i845 DDR platform, it'll save you cash and perform pretty darn close to a i850 RDRAM setup.
 
If that's what it's for, than I just might stick it out another year or so, but that's just me. The video card is fine, but if you have the bucks, and want the bragging rights, than I'd also suggest a Radeon 8500, but personally, I don't see you needing it. The thing about waiting 'til next year to upgrade is that prices generally won't get much lower and you can set yourself up better for later upgrades by going to DDR/RDRAM platforms now.
