opinions on this used car?

we're (my and my bro) looking at buying a used saturn (a 1999 ls1 4-door automatic) with about 76000 miles on it from a local dealer. we talked to a friend at goodyear about them, and he said that, on some older models, that saturns can burn oil when they start getting older. he said, though, that it was less likely on a '99 since its a newer car. the dealer is asking for $5000 (down from $6500), so do you have any opinions on this?

Overpriced. A 99 is now 6 model years old. $5000 is way too much for it.

get it checked out by a certified technician... should be okay though as long as its been taken care of.

make sure you get out and drive it first though, i test drove some older saturns a while back, and they were not the most comfortable cars to drive, and horrinbly underpowered. For 5k, i almost might be tempted to find an older Honda Accord.

they do tend to burn oil as they get older, but if you take care of it it will last you a long time. Saturns are nice cars as long as you don't expect a BMW.

I knew a guy who had over 200k on his Saturn. The impression I get is so long as you take care of a Saturn the things will run next to forever.

Saturn = :thumbsdown: my 97 drank oil like coffee, had problems with hesitation and stalling and the altenator was dying for a second time. It did however never break down completley and leave me stranded. They are also very noisy.

I'd rather get a Neon... for that much you can probably find a nice Corolla or Sentra.

My '93 Saturn does have an oil urge. It was great to about 80k miles, then had a lot of problems between 80 and 90k. Since then it's been pretty good, now at 102k.

When my dad was looking for a new used car last year, his budget was 5k, and was deciding between a '96 saturn (although lower mileage then what you are looking at) and a '91 mercedes. He went with the mercedes, but I'd beleive the price you are looking at.
