Opinions on this UPS??

A nasty lightning storm wiped out power today and left me without a computer when I needed it most. It's time for a UPS. I don't need anything too fancy or too expensive, just something that'll protect my equipment and hopefully give me 30+ minutes of low-load usage to get things closed down, protect from corrupted files, finish downloads, etc. Looking to power an Athlon XP CPU, basic computer with 2 optical drives and 2 hard drives, 19" CRT monitor, a cable modem and router. That's about it, don't need the printer, speakers or anything else powered up and won't be doing any gaming or high CPU activities while on backup. This looks like it meets my needs, 1250VA, nearly 700 watts, 1000 joules of protection, 8 outlets, etc. Can get it for about $115 shipped. Anyone have any pros, cons, or something better in the $100-$125 range?

Belkin

Looks like overkill to get an "enterprise" model. I have a consumer belkin 1250? VA and use it for 2 PCs (P4 3.2C, Cel 1.3A) plus router and a 19" CRT until I switched to LCD. Cost was around $100 if I recall correctly.

How much time can you get out of yours?

thats a good price. seems like massive overkill but i got an apc1000 on a similar deal so i took it.

my specs are in my sig and i have like 28min to shutdown according to the software. and that is with everything plugged in- includiing speakers, router, printer etc. so you'll have plenty of time i would imagine.

I turned off my system after 15 minutes once back when I had the CRT, I wasn't getting a low battery warning yet. So over 15 minutes, no idea how much more.

Okay, if that one is overkill, how about slightly smaller? Here's a 900VA model, 540 watts, 1080 joules, 4 battery outlets, etc. Less than $84 shipped.

I'm okay with units in that price range and don't mind buying a little more than I need. Mostly I want to know about the quality/performance/cost ratio of Belkins.

I agree. Belkin makes some of the worst power protection products around. They never seem to shut down like they're designed when the surge protection is compromised. Even Consumer Reports said all the Belkin surge protectors they tested failed. I highly recommend you stay away from Belkin power protection products.

I recently ordered a new APC Back-UPS RS from Here. You might want to take a look at it.

That's the first time I've heard such negative things about Belkin... They're not exactly the cheapest UPSes out there, but significantly less than APC's models, which charge near-enterprise level prices for the same amount of power. So we should all spend 3x as much on APC gear to make sure our systems stay safe? BTW, I have read also from others around here that Belkin was better at honoring their insurance / warranty than APC was... obviously, you'd disagree with that as well?

Well I can't say for sure. I haven't heard the results of people who file a claim with Belkin. I also don't know about APC as I've never had something damaged because their product failed. I have done a few RMA's with APC and they've given me excellent service. The one company I did file a claim with was Tripp Lite and they denied it, so I don't recommend them because of that. Personally I'd rather stick with the company whose products work rather than the one that may fix things when their products fail.
